Personal Statement

Busy as they were, my parents never neglected their education for me. Ranging from Olympic mathematics and physics, to piano and calligraphy---my childhood life was filled up with learning skills, intensive and abundant. Different from those who were confined to study, I meanwhile developed an agreeable personality under my parents’ open educational pattern. I have been given as many opportunities as possible to search for what I really like and when applying for university, I decisively elected information technology as the field I shall step into for my life.

Software Engineering was my major at university. This is a highly technological discipline in modern times that needs unceasing innovation. Excited about its creativity, flexibility and brightening prospect in the future, I focused on learning my major courses and gained a lot of improvements in various aspects. Firstly, I have learned to grow up from past experiences. It was a group project of Hotel Information Management System Development for which I was the team leader. However, due to an inferior time management, when we finally grasped how to do relevant jobs, there was little time left for us to complete them. I immediately figured out a feasible course of action and we eventually managed to finish this project by staying up late for a whole week. Bearing this lesson in mind, I started preparation early in another project about RFO MIS Development. Marketing research and internet survey, with which were conducted in advance, I, as the team leader again, was able to set aside enough time to optimize every team member’s advantages by assigning them different tasks. This time I led my team to finish the project previous to the deadline and also received an approval from the professor for our work. “To stand up from where you have fallen down”---this traditional Chinese saying infers the importance of perception and the ability to make progress for one person who wants to achieve success. For IT domain this quality is more necessary and I am very lucky to have found myself owning it.

My second advantage over others, besides the one above, may be my open-minded thinking model and my great willingness to accept new things. Engineering and arts, the two things that seem to have little connection with each other were both learned well by me at university. While majoring in Software Engineering, I also minored in Chinese Language and Literature. Actually, my career goal is to become an excellent business analyst and the knowledge I have obtained from my minor indeed helped me very much with my writing techniques. I have kept a balance between my major and my minor, which brought me a wide range of knowledge. Another fact that can attest to this is my over one-year formal work experience after graduation. As a business analyst in Sinosoft Co.,Ltd., I not only applied well of the software engineering principles I have learned in class to reality, but also self-studied much financial and insurance knowledge. Up to now, I have accomplished many outstanding achievements in terms of making business analysis and system development for

several life insurance companies including Yingda Taihe, Tian’an, Jixiang, and New China Life Insurance. I gained a sense of achievement from my job and in return it also has been promoting me to become mature fast. A strong sense of social responsibility---this is what I used to feel far away from me but being a business analyst now I consider it as compulsory to offer good services to my clients. In the past 365 days, I usually worked overtime to familiarize myself with my own business affairs and tried to quickly integrate to the new environment. Though I have encountered quite a few difficulties in my job, I am grateful for this experience because it perfected me and let me feel self-worth.

When it comes to my reason for going to Hong Kong for a further education, I have made this decision after a well consideration rather than a result of an impulse. In recent years, a great deal of newly graduated young people want to go abroad to study yet only a small part of them are clear about their objectives of doing so. Having worked for one year in society, I do not look forward to the extravagant life-style in Hong Kong, neither the envious feeling others may have of me simply for the fact that I can live there. Instead, I would like to turn myself into a qualified, exceptional IT personnel or even a good manager with the help of the elite tertiary education provided by your esteemed graduate school. *** is a top university in Hong Kong and your program of *** especially meets my need as you attach more importance to train students’ practical ability other than purely inculcate theories. I believe by learning in this program I can attain greater self-improvements to get equipped with more professional qualifications, find myself a more suitable place in society and finally realize my value of life to the fullest.

Yours sincerely,

ZHANG Qingwen
