Oxford and Cambridge have now decided to remove the words CAN’T and IMPOSSIBLE from their dictionary. Jessica Cox ,born in 1983 ,in Arizona , is the world's first licensed armless pilot.

1

The girl from Tucson, Arizona got the Sport Pilot certificate lately and became the first pilot licensed to fly using only her feet. Jessica Cox was born without arms , but that has only stopped her from doing one thing: using the word ‘can't’.

Cox graduated from the University of Arizona in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in communications. Cox has not used prosthetic arms since she turned 14. Using her feet as most people use their hands, she is able , among other things , to drive an unmodified car with an unrestricted license , to type on a keyboard at 25 words per minute, and to put in and remove her contact lenses.

Jessica Cox flew in a single engine airplane for the first time via Wright Flight in 2005. Cox earned her pilot's certificate on October 10, 2008 after three years of training and is qualified to fly a light-sport aircraft to an altitude of 10 ,000 feet.

\" She's a good pilot, She's rock solid,\" said Parrish Traweek ,42, the flying instructor at San Manuel's Ray Blair Airport. Parrish Traweek runs PC Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Services and has trained many pilots , some of whom didn't come close to Cox's abilities.

Doctors never leamed why she was born without ams , but she figured out early that she didn't want to use prosthetic devices. So ,the next time you are ready to tell yourself “I can't ponsibly..\" ,remember this amazing young woman and change your vocabulary.

The Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has added an unconventional course to its curriculum. Medical students can now take cooking classes in addition to their usual training, 'This is intended to improve doctors’ nutritional knowledge and encourage them to use food to prevent or cure illnesses.

According to a survey , most medical students in the U. s. receive on average 20 hours of nutritional education throughout their entire education, This is an extremely low number, especially when one considers that diet is at the core( 核心) of many modern Westem diseases. From Type 2 diabetes , heart disease, , reflux to obesity , allergies , depression and arthritis , eating the right foods can go a long way towards recovery, while significantly reducing dependency on medicinal drugs.

A big part of the problem is that nutritional guidelines in North America are vague , impractical , and difficult to apply. Everyone, from doctors to schoolchildren ,learns about specific nutrients and percentages of recommended daily intakes , but that doesn't translate easily to the grocery store.

Training doctors to cook , however, takes nutritional education to a whole new level. Not only will doctors be able to explain which foods are best to eat ,but they will also understand how to prepare them.Tulane medical

2

students prepare for teaching future patients by offering free cooking classes to New Orleans residents -a mutually (相互地) beneficial arrangement for everyone who shares that food.

Fortunately , the model seems to be catching on. Already two other medical schools have licensed the curriculum and are adding it to their courses. Tulane also offers nutritional training for health - focused chefs from a nearby cooking school , which makes a lot of sense. After all , with the frequency with which North Americans eat out, we could all benefit from chefs who know how to balance nutrition with great taste, 28.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 2?

A.Proper diets help cure the diseases. B.Food can totally replace drugs.

C.The diseases are difficult to treat, D.There are some typical Western diseases. 29. What's the author's attitude towards the present nutritional guidelines in America? A.Amazed. B.Positive. C.dissatisfied. D.Interested. 30.What can we know about the course from the last paragraph? A.It will benefit chefs B.It is becoming popular.

C.It has a long way to go D.It encourages eating out 31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Take a Cooking Course B.Learn to Be a Good Doctor

C.Live Your Life to the Full D.Let Food Be Your Medicine

Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found ,among other things , that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.

The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review , more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.

Smell, which decides on the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to Î0,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1 ,000 genes , which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome (基因组)。Rescearchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together rewarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense, These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1 ,000 olfactory (嗅觉的) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.

According to one study in the research review , smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry , and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites,

In contrast ,the smells of peppermint (薄荷) and cinnamon (肉桂) were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers' impatience. Similarly , the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.

However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes: while others hate them. The Israel rescarchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors( 感受器)。

32. What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out? A.The type of food smells.

B.The logical part of human brain

3

C.The relationship between food and feelings

D.The nature of human olfactory system.

33.Which smell of the following can help people concentrate? A.Coffee B.Pizza. C.Bread. D.Fast food. 34. What do we know from the last paragraph? A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.

B.Every person has the same pattern of genes. C.Different people are sensitive to different smells. D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A.Logic and behavior.

B.Smell and its influence on feelings.

C.Sense ability and food tastes. D.Olfactory system and its change

I'm so sory that I won't be able t0 attend the lecture on the British literature this Sunday morning because an old cassmate of mine will come to see me that day. We haven't seen each other for quite a long time and I have promised to meet him at the railway station, for he is not familiar with this city.

As you know, I'm deeply interested in the British literature, so it's really a pity to miss the lecture. But I wonder if you could borrow the record or have a copy of the PPT for me. It would mean so much to me to watch the record or PPT and learn what's covered in the lecture.

I would appreciate it a lot if you could heip me. Best wishes to you.

Yours sincerely
