Ladies and Gentlemen:

My name is ___。Today,My topic is Honesty.

As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’stooth. This is a true story.

65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. Heoften visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted oneto keep as a treasure.

In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had toleave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one ofthe teeth from the dragon’s mouth.

1

He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at havingstolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on hisconscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decidedto put right his childish error. In 20__, he visited Qingdao and returned it tothe Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported onhis visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I thinkto err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correctone’s error.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep anhonest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of myfriends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

It is true that most of us value honesty highly. However, nowadays we oftenconfront confidence crisis such as cheating, overcharging, fake commodities andso on. I think that we should be honest because being honest is not onlybeneficial to ourselves but also to others and the whole society. The reasonscan be listed as follows.Firstly, only honest people can be truly respected bythe others and can make more friends over a long period of time.

Secondly, honesty, which is the traditional virtue of the Chinese people, can

2

make our life easier and more harmonious. Thirdly, honesty can make oursociety more stable. A case in point is that Singapore, a society featuringtrustworthiness and integrity, has a comparatively low criminal rate.

Responsbility can be understood in many ways. for the parents , they havehad the responsibility for caring for and fostering their children since thebirth of their baby.for teachers, both in kindergartens and colleges, they alsoshould be responsible for the study and life of their students, that is tosay, teahers are the second parents of children somewhile.

for us,as a friend of others,it is our responsibility to help our friendswhen they are in trouble or faced with difficulties. each one has the differentresponsibily based on their roles but we must take it for granted that we areresponsible for the society.

Good afternoon, today my topic is Academic integrity, starting withme。Academic integrity is a fundamental value upon which colleges anduniversities are built. Students, faculty and staff are expected to contributefrank opinions, and other academic exercises that are vital to sustaining thediscussion and exchange of ideas. For learning and scholarship to thrive, academic communities cannot tolerate acts of academic dishonesty, such ascheating, misrepresentation.

3

there are four fundamental values that characterize an academic communityof integrity:

Honesty. The quest for truth and knowledge requires intellectual andpersonal honesty in learning, teaching, research and service.

Trust. Academic institutions must foster a climate of mutual trust in orderto stimulate the free exchange of ideas.

Fairness. All interactions among students, faculty and administratorsshould be grounded in clear standards, practices and procedures.

Respect. Learning is acknowledged as a participatory process, and a widerange of opinions and ideas is respected.

As graduate students, academic integrity is particularly important in thefuture when We expected to service to others and our societies. So How do wemaintain academic integrity?

First, We make the effort to understand what counts as dishonesty and whythis is wrong. Then, We work hard to master the rules of academic disciplinesand achieve personal academic outcomes that we can be proud .

Meanwhile, We appreciate the value of critical thinking and, a positiveattitude, We take a problem-solving approach to learning, combining theory andpractice in

sophisticated ways

At last, we should have the habit of developing new ideas and new ways ofseeing, understanding, expressing, and communicating

Almost all of us heard the story “Here Comes the Wolf” when we were littlekids. What we can learn from the story is that we must be honest. However, there’re lots of phenomena of dishonesty nowadays.

Being dishonest does great harm not only to other people but also toyourself. Take the case of fake milk powder for example. After drinking thiskind of milk, the babies had big heads while their legs and arms were stillthin, which badly affected their health. To our great relief, the producers gotaccused and punished for all the serious consequences in the end.

Having the reputation of being honest and reliable will make other peopletrust you, which will provide you many benefits and give you opportunities thatothers may not get. Being honest, you will find it easier to cooperate withothers and people will be friendly to you and support you. In a sense, if lifeis a longjourney, honesty will be the backpack that should be taken along allthe way.

Let’s pick up our “backpack”—honesty, and start the wonderful journey!

“I am very sorry,”said the manager,“we cannot insure your life as yourparents were not healthy.”

As the man was leaving the office, depressed, he met a clerk, who hadoverheard the conversation.

“You must not be so frank and tell the truth,”said the clerk,“no officewill insure you if you speak like that. Use your imagination a little.”

The man went to another office and was shown into the manager s room.
