A
One winter evening, a storekeeper was going to close up his shop for the night. While he was standing outside in the snow putting up the window shutters (百叶窗), he saw Seth, a lazy, and good-for-nothing fellow, still strolling inside. Suddenly, Seth grabbed a pound of fresh butter from the shelf, hid it in his hat and put on the hat quickly. No sooner had the storekeeper seen the act than he hit upon the idea that he would punish the thief.
“I say, Seth,” said the storekeeper, coming in and closing the door after him. Seth was naturally anxious to leave as soon as possible. “I say, Seth, sit down,” said the storekeeper in a friendly tone. “I think now, on such a cold night, something warm to drink would be perfect.”Seth had the butter and was eager to flee, but the temptation of something warm to drink made him hesitate. The rightful owner of the butter offered him a cup of hot drink, took him by the shoulders and planted him in a seat close to the stove. The storekeeper stuffed in the stove as many sticks of wood as he could possibly fit inside. “Seth, we’ll have a little warmer drink.
Without it, you’d freeze going home on such a cold night.”Seth already could feel the butter settling down closer to his hair, so he jumped up, declaring that he must go. “Sit down; don’t be in such a hurry,” replied the storekeeper, pushing
him back into the chair again. Streaks(条) of melted butter came pouring from under the poor man’s hat. The storekeeper kept on stuffing wood into the stove. “You seem to be sweating! Let me put your hat away for you.”
“No!” exclaimed poor Seth at last, unable to stand it a moment longer. “No, I must go; let me out.” A greasy (油腻的) waterfall of butter was now pouring down the poor man’s face and neck, soaking ( 浸泡) into his clothes, and trickling down his body into his boots. He was bathed in oil
from head to toe. Just as this victim rushed out of the door, the storekeeper said, “I reckon the fun I’ve had out of you is worth the money, so I shan’t charge you for that pound of butter in your hat.”
21. According to the passage, why did Seth put the butter in his hat? A. Because he wanted to play a trick on the storekeeper. B. Because he didn’t want to pay for it.
C. Because he was lazy and good-for-nothing.
D. Because he didn’t carry his shopping bag with him.
22. What can we learn from the passage about the storekeeper? A. He offered Seth a cup of hot drink in order to keep him warm. B. He forced Seth to take a seat near the stove on purpose. C. He regretted charging Seth too much money for the butter. D. He decided to make friends with Seth and have fun with him. 23. Which of the following can best describe the storekeeper? A. Warm-hearted and modest. B. Energetic and honest. C. Wise and humorous. D. Stubborn and aggressive. 24. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Great Fun in Selling Butter B. A Foolish Customer C. A Fun-loving Storekeeper D. A Smart Punishment

In a computer age, a broadband Internet connection is very popular now. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those in the early days. Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger too. However, there’s a hidden problem: you have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.
Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely (稀疏地) populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense.
But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere.
Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper more efficient fiber optics cables (光纤电缆) promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users. Still, the “last mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology has any indication, it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go. 25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Internet service providers are willing to care about customers in remote areas. B. Broadband Internet connections have been popular everywhere.
C. Computers can’t become popular in developing countries forever. D. The problem of Internet access hasn’t been completely dealt with.
26. According to paragraph 3, we can know that technological advancements_______. A. make TV and telephone available everywhere
B. make it possible for more people to use the Internet C. bring faster Internet connections to users D. bring great changes to people’s everyday life
27. According to the passage, what may eventually settle the “last mile” problem? A. More and more Internet connections.
B. The rapid progress in cell phone technology. C. The broadband connection’s getting faster. D. More and more Internet users.

Plankton Poop May Help Scientists Predict Climate Changes
Scientists trying to predict future changes in our climate are using every possible source of data to make their calculations. Lately, they have learned that one of the most sensitive instruments could be floating right in front of them---tiny clumps (碎片) of organic matter that drift in the ocean.
As if from a different dimension, the submersible (能潜水的) device called PELAGRA (沉积物搜集器) slips below the surface and sinks into a research pool at the National Oceanography Centre, in Southampton, England. Soon, two such devices will be deployed (有效利用) to the South Atlantic to collect samples of so-called “marine snow.” “Marine snow is composed of dead phytoplankton ( 浮游植物) which sort of clump together to form flakes and then they’re heavy enough to sink down into the deep ocean. It can also be formed of little animals which eat the little plants and then they poop (排泄) out that carbon, and then their fecal pellets (屎粒) are very heavy and they sink down to the bottom of the ocean, also carrying lots of carbon with them,” said biogeochemist Stephanie Henson.
Although invisible to the naked eye, phytoplankton are so abundant that they are responsible for half of all the carbon absorbing photosynthetic (光合成的) activity on earth. Understanding that process could help scientists create more advanced computer models of global environmental changes. But the challenge was to build a submersible device that could float between 50 and 500 meters deep. That’s where scientists say all this carbon is being absorbed, and beginning its journey to the bottom of the sea.
“The way that we do that is by putting them in tanks of water... and adding weights until they’re just sinking, at which point we know they have the same density (密度) as the water that they’re sitting in,” said Project Leader Richard Sanders.
PELAGRA will suck ocean water with marine snow into containers and periodically bring them to the surface for detailed study. Scientists hope that PELAGRA devices will help them answer another interesting question --- why is marine snow more abundant in some parts of the ocean than in others. I’m George Putic, VOA news, Washington. October 27th, 2015. 32. According to the passage, we can know that PELAGRA ________. A. can be used to collect samples of marine snow from the ocean
B. can slip below the surface of the sea and stays at the bottom of the sea C. can bring some phytoplankton back to the surface for further study D. can predict how phytoplankton live in the deep ocean 33. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss? A. What animals are carrying lots of carbon. B. What little animals mainly eat and poop. C. Why marine snow sinks into the deep ocean. D. How marine snow is formed.
34. What does “that process” refer to in the fourth paragraph?
A. Putting the device in tanks of water. B. Predicting future changes in our climate.
C. The carbon absorbing photosynthetic activity.
D. The phytoplankton’s influence on carbon absorbing. 35. Where is probably the passage taken from? A. A newspaper. B. An advertisement. C. A radio program. D. A fashion magazine. 第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)

Speed reading seems like a manna (甘露) from heaven for people with thousands of pages to read. Besides, it helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb, providing a filter (过滤器) that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach them.
___36___ Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension. Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document. Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks.
Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block. ___37___ This will also make reading less tiresome and boring. To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at one time.
Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks. Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster. In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer. ___38___
If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document, do not re-read right away. Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading. ___39___Getting your own reading corner will also help.
___40___Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned(上述的) and soon, you’ll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.
A. Reducing the time you spend on a number of words in a block will make no difference. B. The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need. C. As a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice. D. Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again. E. This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.
F. Your valuable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.
G. Thus, your reading speed will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer. 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45 分)

They don’t have enough time to attend to the old people in their family, which has become a prominent social problem. To solve this problem, our company put out the household robot, which is designed to take care of old people. It can cook meals at a fixed time which can be adjusted according to individual needs. It can also accompany old people in having a chat, playing chess, and doing exercise. Moreover, it can deal with emergencies. For example, if an old man falls ill suddenly, the robot will call doctors for help.
It would be a great help for you if you own such a robot. Thank you.
