Historical Debate on Animal Experimentation

As the experimentation on animals increased, especially the practice of vivisection, so did criticism and controversy. In 1655,the advocate of Galenic physiology Edmund O’Meara said that \"the miserable torture of vivisection places the body in an unnatural state.” O'Meara and others argued that animal physiology could be affected by pain during vivisection, rendering results unreliable. There were also objections on an ethical basis, contending that the benefit to humans did not justify the harm to animals. Early objections to animal testing also came from another angle--many people believed that animals were inferior to humans and so different that results from animals could not be applied to humans.

On the other side of the debate, those in favor of animal testing held that experiments on animals were necessary to advance medical and biological knowledge. Claude Bernard-----who is sometimes known as the \"prince of vivisectors \" and the father of physiology, and whose wife, Marie Francoise Martin, founded the first anti-vivisection society in France in 1883 -----famously wrote in 1865 that \"the science of life is a superb and dazzlingly lighted hall which may be reached only by passing through a long and ghastly kitchen\". Arguing that \"experiments on animals…are entirely conclusive for the toxicology and hygiene of man... the effects of these substances are the same on man as on animals, save for differences in degreehe standard scientific method.

First-tier Cities Are Barely Livable

Most first-tier cities in China are barely suitable for living due to their poor ecological environment, despite rapid economic development and preferential regulations for investment, said a newly released report by a top Chinese think tank on Sunday First-tier cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, failed to make the list of habitable cities even though they are in the top 10 in terms of commercial advantages, unification of city and countryside, and culture development, according to a report on China’s urban competitiveness from the National Academy of Economic Strategy under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Beijing ranks best in terms of academic resources and intellectual atmosphere, second-best in business environment and sustainability, and third in cultural industry. But it dropped to 74th and 119th in habitable and ecological environment, the report said Huang Hui, a 27-year-old software engineer from Beijing, said he found the report objective\". \"Beijing has the best medical, academic resources compared with other cities, but it's not necessarily the best choice when it comes to being habitable, \"he said. I’m proud of the cultural diversification in the city, but it’s a pity that Beijing sacrifices the most basic essentials, air and water, simply in exchange for all the rapid development.”

In the past decade, there have been mounting problems in cities nationwide, including traffic jams, housing tension and food safety issues

However, many first-tier cities, despite their outstanding competitiveness, are barely people-oriented and hardly satisfactory in ecological protection, LI said. High housing prices have become the main reason that some cities are increasingly uninhabitable\". With other reasons including poor air quality and traffic congestion, he said.

According to the report, livability is the primary and most basic function of a city and plays a key role in upgrading urban competitiveness.

More Students Choose to Study Abroad

Industry experts pointed out that there is a prevailing trend of Chinese students studying overseas at a younger age.

This trend is reflected in the fact that the number of Chinese students sitting the college entrance exam is in a downward trend

In Beijing, it is the fifth year in a row that the numbers have fallen. About 76, 000students signed up to take the exam this year, down 6 percent from a year earlier, marking the lowest ever application level, according to Beijing Education Examination Authority.

So, what is behind the lowering age of overseas Chinese students?

First, going abroad is an alternative to the national college entrance exam, which has long been described as a stampede of \"thousands of soldiers and tens of thousands of horses across a single log bridge”.

“The enormous pressure will definitely harm a child’s physical and mental health,

and I don’t think it's worthwhile that all the hard work goes into a one-time exam,” he added.

Lu Jun, a senior consultant at Chivast Education International Co. which is the first approved intermediary agency by the Ministry of Education, said most Chinese parent firmly believe that the younger their children go abroad, the sooner they get accustomed to the local cultural and social environment

Studying abroad can cultivate young students to be more independent and more adaptable to new environments. These abilities will help them in job-hunting in the future, said Lu

In the next decade, the population of China's middle class will reach some 400 million from its current 150 million, according to the Boston Consulting Group forecast.

Read carefully the following excerpt on job-hopping, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should the main message of the excerpt, and then on whether job-hopping is a good thing.

You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Is Job-hopping a Good Thing?

Changing jobs every couple of years is the new norm among Chinese graduates. A survey conducted by Peking University and Ganji. com, the leader of domestic classified websites, shows that nearly half of young graduates born after 1990 plan to stick to their first jobs for only one year

“I see no reason to remain loyal to an employer who doesn’t reciprocate. I want stability, but I'm not willing to waste 5 years of my life working for a company when I have no opportunity of advancement, low pay, a poor environment, and zero benefits. If companies want us to stick around, they have to give us a reason to stay.

“Job-hopping is good, maybe for the person since it gives him the chance to enhance his skills in different jobs. It also helps him search for the job he really likes and develops the knowledge of such a job.”

I think job-hopping is necessary for people who are ambitious and want to have a bright future. It's especially very popular among young people if they think they cannot get any prospects of opportunity, promotion and fair treatment like salary or Position. Yes, if it is the case, I think it's the time for them to change to another job. As for me, I prefer to quit my Job to find another job, since the salary is not enough even to support my family. And my boss doesn't treat me well so I have no loyalty to this company.”

Read carefully the following excerpt on the effects of part-time jobs on students, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should the main message of the excerpt, and then

on whether college students should have part-time jobs in their college days. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

The Effects of Part-time Jobs on Students

While academics are the main focus of college students, many will also spend their college years in part-time employment. In the report \"Student Employment and Higher Education: Empiricism and Contradiction”, members of the American Educational Research Association reported that more than 50 percent of students attending four-year colleges work part time. The reasons for working may vary ---earning funds for tuition or spending money ----but many benefits exist beyond the paycheck

Classroom learning is important, but the culture of workplaces and offices is hard to impart within the classroom. Holding down a regular position outside the classroom will allow students to gain firsthand experience in office culture and politics, which will be helpful upon graduation and their first full-time job

In today's weak economy, it is even more crucial for students to make as many valuable

connections as possible. Working part time for a campus office or off-campus organization will allow students to network outside their social circles, giving them valuable recommendations and contacts for their full-time job search.

Many on-campus part-time jobs will give students an opportunity to learn administrative skills, such as phone and email etiquette, office electronics troubleshooting and meeting manners. Gaining such skills while in school will place a student-employee ahead of the curve when they enter the full-time workforce.

Pros and Cons of Advertising

Advertising has always been a controversial issue. Some people contend that advertising has positive impacts on society while others think it also has negative influences. The following are some of the supporters' and opponents opinions.

“Daily life needs advertisements because the main function of advertising is to disseminate information on commodities, services, culture, employment, student enrollment and even marriage.”

“Advertisements can help people save a lot of time in shopping, looking for jobs, etc.”

“Advertisements enable us to know more alternatives while purchasing a particular item and enjoy more satisfactory and reliable services.”

While opposing voices can also be heard as follows:

“Advertisements sometimes mislead consumers with exaggerated and dishonest claims and provide false information. Fake advertising cheats consumers and, in some serious cases, threaten people s lives.”

People are more easily bombarded by various advertisements on the Internet, and they are so inundated with banner ads and spam email that they have begun to ignore internet advertising just as much as ads on traditional media. Sometimes, some virus brought by online ads will not only bring risks to the system of computer, worse still, some unhealthy advertisements would exert negative influences on people psychologically.”

“One disadvantage of advertising on the Internet is that your marketing materials are automatically available for anyone in the world to copy, regardless of the legal ramifications. Logos, images and trademarks can be copied and used for commercial purposes, or even to slander or mock your company.”

Idol Worship

The heated topics that dominate Sina Weibo are mostly related to celebrities, especially updates on the \"little fresh flesh \"stars like Wu Yifan, a pop icon and young actor in China, who are followed by hundreds of millions of fans.

“I think it is like everyone has faith in a certain thing, which can be a brand or an item that they admire, \"she said.

She added that fans also have a vanity in that they want their idol to be stronger,

more popular and better supported than others.

“Fans would repost and like the posts of their idols because everyone hopes their faith will be acknowledged and supported by more people, \"she explained. “ It is natural that whenever others deem your faith wrong, you would feel as if you are being attacked and repudiated.”

She dislikes the title \"brain-damaged fans, \" which is used to describe some fans who go to extreme about their stars.

“Others may view fans with glasses of color. They believe it is insane and unreasonable for a person to be excited about a stranger, \"she said.

“But in fact, celebrity worship is the same as a hobby. Fans can feel happy and empowered from their hobby. Collectors are brain-damaged fans of antiques. For young people, what excites them are usually celebrities.”

Miss Wang said most of the die-hard fans of these \"little fresh flesh\" are students who have a plenty of spare me, and about 99 percent are girls. She expects their celebrity worship will fade as soon as they graduate and go into the working world.

on whether we should advocate genetically modified food or not.. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.

Genetically Modified Food: Are They Safe?

Two years ago in Edinburgh, Scotland, eco--vandals stormed a field, crushing canola plants. Last year in Maine, midnight raiders hacked down more than 3,000 experimental popular trees, And in San Diego, protesters smashed sorghum and sprayed paint over greenhouse walls.

This far-flung outrage took aim at genetically modified crops. But the protests backfired: all the destroyed plants were conventionally bred. In each case, activists mistook ordinary plants for GM varieties.

It's easy to understand why. In a way, GM crops ----now on some 109 million acres of farmland worldwide ----are invisible. You can’t see, taste or touch a gene inserted into a plant or sense its effects on the environment, You can’t tell, just by looking, whether pollen containing a foreign gene can poison butterflies or fertilize plants miles away. That invisibility is precisely what worries people. How, exactly, will GM crops affect the environment----and when will we notice?

Advocates of GM, or transgenic, crops say the plants will benefit the environment by requiring fewer toxic pesticides than conventional crops. But critics fear the potential risks and wonder how big the benefits really are. \"We have so many questions about these plants, \"remarks Guenther Stotzky, a soil microbiologist at New York University. “There’s a lot we don't know and need to find out.”

As GM crops multiply in the landscape, unprecedented numbers of researchers have started fanning into the fields to get the missing information. Some of their recent findings are reassuring; others suggest a need for vigilance.

For many people the issue of using animals for science is black and white: either pro-animal rights, or very much in favor of using animals since we are the highest level creature.

After analyzing the two contrasting viewpoints,we can summarize them as follows. Some people say that using animals in experiment is of great value and can promote the advance of medical science which is significant to the whole society. Others, however, deem that this behavior is not only inhuman but also forbidden by law. In addition, the research finding got by using animals in experimentation may be inappropriate and unreliable. As for me, I think both of them have some points, but we should never go to extremes. On the one hand, some higher-level animals share with us feelings, thoughts and behaviors and so we should look after them and respect them. If we are so unsure about the effects of a drug, then we should do further chemical testing before doing live and cruel animal testing. After all, few people are inherently cruel, and it is much more acceptable to test the drugs on a monkey than on a person. In short, being cruel for the sake of being

cruel and with no tangible results to show for it is definitely stepping over a boundary of acceptable behavior, but at other times if the benefits of the research are explicit, tangible and valuable then I feel that the research is justified.

但如果研究所带来的利益是明显、切实并且有价值的 ( explicit, tangible and valuable),则这些试验是合理的( the research is justified)

When considering where to work, graduates are often in a dilemma of choosing between first-tier cities and second-tier cities. People's opinions differ sharply on this issue. Some individuals hold that first-tier cities are not a preferable place for them to work, live and develop。

From the excerpt shown above, we can summarize several factors which could account for their viewpoints. Firstly, even though first-tier cities provide best medical, academic resources compared with other cities, they are not necessarily the best option for living in terms of ecological environment. Secondly, some cities are increasingly over-crowded,resulting in poor air quality and traffic congestion. More importantly, high prices of houses and real estates reduce the appeal of first-tier cities. Young people are more likely to flee the financial pressure.

For my part, I think a first-tier city will suit me better, despite of its crowdedness and high living costs and high prices of houses. To begin with, it goes without saying that there are more job opportunities in mega-cities, which offer more competitive salaries. In addition, life is more colorful and diversified as first-tier cities provide more choices of products and services. Furthermore, there are abundant resources of education, in particular higher education, in super-large cities, which are unparalleled. In a word, the promising personal and professional development and colorful life there have a great fascination for me

最后,总结到一线城市会提供美好的个人及职业发展前景以及多彩的生活( promising personal and professional development and colorful life)

It is now no longer surprising that many students go abroad for study and there is a prevailing trend of students studying overseas at a younger age, which can be easily reflected in the fact that the number of students sitting the college entrance exam is in downward trend. The reasons for overseas study at an early age are various and obvious To begin with, the students can avoid the enormous pressure of attending the competitive college entrance examination, which sometimes would be detrimental to their physical and psychological health. Moreover, they can learn a foreign language more effectively and understand the culture better since they are immersed in that local cultural and social environment. Finally their overseas experience, their independence and adaptability will probably enable them to be ahead of local counterparts when competing for a good job in the future.

As far as I am concerned, I am not in favor of the trend that students further their study overseas at an early age. First of all, it surely costs much far more money. For the same degree study, the tuition fee students pay in a foreign university would be around seven times, or more in many cases, the amount we pay in a local university, not to mention the differences in living costs. Secondly, those who leave their homes and their parents at a young age will suffer from loneliness and homesickness and they can easily feel isolated in a new environment.

文章第一段,作者先提出出国留学这一普遍现象( many students go abroad for study)。

即成本(costs much more money )生活孤单( suffer from loneliness and homesickness)

Some people tend to stick to their positions all the time, as they think the longer one works in a particular field, the more skillful one will be at it. Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life to scientific research. These people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own field. They are usually high achievers. Some, however, are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue what is new and stimulating. According to the excerpt, job-hoppers change jobs for various reasons. Firstly, they hop from one position to another because they never seem content with their present situation. They would quit when there is no advancement in promotion or pay. Secondly, some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances; so they hop from job to job.

As for me, I want to be professionally strong. Therefore, I am not in favor of constant job hopping, as the saying goes \"Jack of all trades, master of none\". A person who works for several different companies throughout their working life certainly gets to know how things are done differently in various companies, but they often forego the opportunity to build a career because many companies prefer promote employees who have been working for them for a long time and are thus familiar with their practices, rather than putting new people into key positions, which could be problematic. In conclusion, change can be beneficial, but I believe that, In general, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages and that constant job change leads to graver problems.

作者先在第一段提出有些人喜欢在一份职业上坚持到底( stick to their positions all the time),如教师,科研工作者,这些人最后都是各自领域专家( specialists in their own field),并大都取得了成就( high achievers)。第二段过渡到相反的观点,即有些人不同,他们喜欢跳槽( in the habit of job- hopping),然后总结材料中跳槽者的观点:第一,不满现状( they never seem content with their present situation)。第二,喜欢交朋友以及不同的工作体验( Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances; ) 第三段为作者自己观点,作者反对跳槽,主要原因是会失去晋升的机会。

Nowadays many college students take part-time jobs in their spare time. However, on this issue people's opinions differ sharply. Those who are in favor of part-time jobs consider that taking a part-time job brings several benefits to college students. Above all, part-time jobs provide students with valuable opportunities to put their knowledge into practice, and the experience they get will prepare them for the future job market. Furthermore, students can earn some money to help ease the burden on their families. Other individuals, however, hold the opposite view that many problems may be caused by part-time jobs. For one thing, part-time jobs might affect student's precious time. For another, students may be cheated or hurt by their employers for lack of social experience. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages, I think that we college students should step out of campus and engage in some part-time jobs. Undoubtedly, it opens a window for us to get to know the society. But it is worth noting that we cannot spend too much time and energy doing part time jobs at the expense of our studies. To conclude, if the schedule permits, doing part-time jobs in spare time is beneficial for college students.

在第一段,作者先指出兼职工作非常普遍,然后总结兼职工作的三点好处:给同学提供学以致用的机会( provide students with valuable opportunities to put their knowledge into practice);积累工作经验( prepare them for the future job market);赚取一定的收入(earn some money to help ease the burden on their families)。在第二段,作者指出兼职工作的两点弊端:影响学生的学习( affect students’ academic career);由于缺乏社会经验,他们容易受到伤害( may be cheated or hurt by their employers for lack of social experience)。第三段为总结段,作者提出了自己的观点,认为兼职利大于弊,只要注意不要影响学习,兼职会为我们开启一扇了解世界的窗口(it opens a window for us to get to know the society).

Advertising has become prevalent In contemporary society. It can be easily seen that billboards, TV commercials and flyers are all exerting profound impact on modern life. In the meantime, whether advertising is a blessing or a curse has sparked spirited debate. Some people argue that advertising has only beneficial influence on our lives while many others contend that it has detrimental effect as well。

Just as the pros and cons mentioned in the excerpt, advertising may have numerous advantages as well as considerable potential drawbacks. In terms of benefits,

advertisements may inform us about the latest products on the market and save people’s precious time of choosing products. However, email spamming may fill up ones mailbox with junk mails and worse still, many of these junk emails may plague PCS with viruses or Trojan horses. Moreover, a high percentage of advertisements in the media are misleading, ., give false or unhealthy information about their products.

As for me, I concede that the proliferation of the advertising industry does not come without any adverse effects. However, the benefits created by advertising far outweigh the disadvantages. Without advertisements, customers may have to spend a lot of time making decisions on what to buy. For example, a person wants to buy a weeks' food and he makes a shopping list with every detail on it. Even if he has a hang-out to go, he will get confused by a dazzling of array of products on the shelves which would take him a plenty of time to select, for there are so many brands. Advertisements can build brand image to simplify customers' process of choice-making. Overall, I am convinced that we should further promote the development of advertising and meanwhile get this industry better-regulated.

(Some people argue that advertising has only beneficial influence on our lives while many others contend that it has detrimental effect as well.)

第三段为个人评论段,作者指出虽然广告有负面作用,但其积极作用大于消极影响( the benefits created by advertising far outweigh the disadvantages)。

In contemporary society, it is universal that idol worship is prevalent among the youth. Different people may worship different idols such as music, sports or culture stars. Idol-worshiping is very popular among the youth both in China and in Western countries. Generally speaking, young people are inclined to adore the person who excels in appearance or talent. This is partly because of the fact that the young generation don’t have faith to rely on, so they look on super stars as their idols or examples. Idol worship

has subtly reflected the thought-provoking social problems that young people somehow lead a hollow spiritual life. They won't do such things if they feel fulfillment every day. For instance, there are not a few blind followers of those superstars, like Gong Yuwen who wasted all of her money, time waiting at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport to find every chance to take photos with celebrities. Undoubtedly, she benefits nothing from her behavior but to waste time and money.

In my opinion, young people should admire stars in a proper way. Firstly, the thing which they should imitate or learn is the courage and perseverance of celebrities in confronting with difficulties. Secondly, idols should inspire the young generation to pursue better life and brighter future. In a word, it is the spirit of pursuing their dreams with insistent effort in successful people that the fans should adore and imitate, instead of their sheer habits or handsome appearance.

在第一段,作者提出在年轻人当中,偶像崇拜是普遍现象(idol worship is prevalent among the youth)。第二段,结合材料分析盲目崇拜的主要原因,即缺少信仰( the young generation don'have faith to rely on),然后以“虹桥一姐”为例,说明盲目崇拜会浪费时间和金钱( waste time and money)。

Currently, there has been much controversy over genetically modified food, with each side offering convincing evidences。Those in favor of this kind of food claim that they offer various advantages. Firstly, genetically modified crops have natural resistance against pests and insects and so less pesticide and insecticide need to be sprayed on them, which will reduce the risk of exposing them to harmful chemicals. Secondly, genetically engineered crops can be grown at places with unfavorable climatic conditions while a normal crop can grow only in specific seasons or under favorable climatic conditions. Thirdly, genetically modified food has an increased shelf life and so there is less fear of food getting rotten quickly, which brings us much convenience.

On the other hand, many people are of the opinion that genetically modified food poses more threats than benefits. The biggest threat is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. Research shows that the alterations in the plants have the possibility

of causing serious medical problems for people, which is yet to clarify. Another risk is that genetically modified plants may threaten the existence of other wild plants in the environment because they grow stronger and faster than the normal plants.

In summary, obvious as the advantages of genetically modified food are, its drawbacks can by no means be ignored. Accordingly, I am firmly convinced that only when all the ill-effects of genetically modified food are dealt with moderation and discretion can we fully embrace it.

全文分为三段,第一段先引出文章主题一一转基因食品,接着分析了转基因食品支持者所提出的一些优点(various advantages首先,转基因食品不需要很多杀虫剂( reduce the necessity of exposing genetically modified crops to harmful pesticides and insecticides);其次,转基因作物可以在气候条件不适宜的情况下生长( genetically engineered crops can be grown at places with unfavorable climatic conditions);再次,转基因食品不会迅速腐烂,因此保鲜时间较长( there is less fear of foods getting rotten quickly)。 最大的威胁是转基因食物对人体的危害( have harmful effects on the human body);另外,转基因作物对所在环境中的其它植物来说是一种威胁( threaten the existence of other wild plants in the environment)第三段是总结段,作者在总结前面观点的同时,表述了个人观点,作者认为只有当我们全面控制了其负面影响,人类才可以全面接受转基因作物(only when all the ill-effects of genetically modified food are dealt with moderation and discretion can we fully embrace it)。
