Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events — love, sadness, good times,

Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. The other is the traditional cowboy music from the West. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars. At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War Ⅱ thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them.Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps (军营) in the South. They learned country music.Slowly it became popular all over the country.

Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada — in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people.About 1,200 radio station broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day.English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor Southerners is now popular all over the world.

Their first recordings were sent to radio stations throughout the United States. Many

listeners were surprised at what they heard.Instead of classical or jazz songs that radio stations usually played, a new sound was born. The Carter Family sounded different. They did not sound as if they had taken music lessons. But it did not matter. The people in poor rural areas thought they sounded just like their neighbors.

The Carters sang songs about living in the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. They sang about the love of a young man for a special girl. They sang about the beauty of nature. They sang about death and sadness. And they sang religious songs that told of the hope for a better life after death.

A.P.Carter sang in the group and also searched for new songs. He often traveled long distances to small towns in the southeastern United States. He wanted to hear the songs that local people sang in their communities. He wrote down the words but kept the music in his memory. When he returned home, he helped Sarah and Maybelle fit them to the Carter Family musical style.

Probably no other musical instrument is as popular around the world as the guitar. Musicians use the guitar for almost every kind of music. Country and Western music would not be the same without a guitar. The traditional Spanish folk music called flamenco could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument.

Music experts do not agree about where the guitar first was played. Most agree it is ancient. Some experts say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than thousands of years ago.

Some other experts say that the ancestor of the modern guitar was brought to Spain

from Persia sometime in the 12th century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 18th century it became similar to the instrument we know today.

Many famous musicians played the instrument. The famous Italian violinist Niccolo Paganinni played and wrote music for the guitar in the early 19th century. Franz Schubert used the guitar to write some of his famous works. In modern times Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia helped make the instrument extremely popular.

In the 1930s, Les Paul began experimenting with ways to make an electric guitar. He invented the solid (实心的) body electric guitar in 1946. The Gibson Guitar Company began producing its famous Les Paul Guitar in 1952. It became a powerful influence on popular music. The instrument has the same shape and the same six strings (弦) as the traditional guitar, but it sounds very different.

参考范文:

Music is more than just sound. It is a carrier of people's thinking, which implies their life experience, thoughts and wisdom. In a sense, music can help people find the virtue of human being and live in harmony.

Music relaxes our mind and body when we are under giant pressure, encourages and excites us when we feel low. Sometimes, with the help of music, we can get rid of the desperate difficulties that we face, and restore the much needed confidence and self-esteem for ourselves. Bathed in the world of music, strangers from different countries will quickly get to know each other and understand other's cultures much better. So, music, as far as I believe, is one of the best keys to opening up the wisdom of mankind.

Just try many different styles of music, and always remember that music is never a waste of your time.
