Sports, drama, and all kinds of organizations keep students busy during high school. Where do they get the money to 13、
do these things? Not everyone gets it from parents. Most have to work for at least some of the money to pay for these activities. Some adults question if high school students should have jobs. I say yes, they undoubtedly should.
Some people worry that teens with after-school jobs will have difficulty finding time for schoolwork. Actually, having a job helps teens make better use of their time. Many jobs take only a couple of hours on weeknights. According to an article, 86 percent of high school students have an after-school, weekend or summer job and students who work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the school year get higher grades than those who do not work at all. Instead of considering working after school ahindrance, it should be looked at as real-world education. Other people think that work adds too much stress(压力), which may be somewhat true, but whether having a job or not, there is always stress. Better to learn how to deal with busy schedulesin a controlled environment like high (日程表)school than to be out on your own and alone in the future, experiencing stress for the first time. I personally would be worried about the teenager who has to become independent without having any experience of working.
The biggest reason teens should work is that it is a healthy way of making money. There are many things teens need to pay for and they cannot do it if they don’t have a job. Not all parents can pay for these activities. My dad told me, “Having a job is a good way to save up for things you are going to need or want to do. You get a lot more out of things if you pay for them yourself.” The sooner kids make money, the sooner they can learn how to use money wisely. If they are not allowed to work in high school, they may have a hard time in the future. Teens should, without a doubt, be allowed to work on school nights.
1.The word“hindrance” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”. A.something that encourages teens to study B.something that helps teens improve study C.something that prevents teens from studying D.something that makes teens lose interest in study 2.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

D.Teens who work will deal with stress better in the future. 3.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Working makes teens get lower grades.
B.Working teaches teens to spend money more wisely. C.Working helps teens to get on better with their parents. D.Working stops teens from taking part in after-school activities. 4.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.What money means to teens. B.Why teens should work after school. 15、Maybe you think that many parents have a lot to learn about what their children are doing online. According to a recent survey by Symantec Company, which makes many kinds of security(安全)software for home and business computers, there's a \"huge difference between parents and their kids\".
Parents of children under the age of 18 were asked to estimate(估计)how much time their kids spent online each week. The parents said about three hours a week on average(平均).The kids-ages 8 to 17-who took the survey said they were spending an average of seven hours online each week.
\"I really think that's because of the time they spend on their mobile phones and computers, when their parents don't even know they're online,\" says Symantec's Bill Rosenkrantz. \"Remember, cellphones, PDAs and video game machines all make it possible to surf the Internet. You don't have to sit in front of a computer screen.\"
And what are the kids doing on the Web? \"They're doing things, like downloading music, they're going to social networking sites, they're actually shopping online when parents don't think they're doing those kinds of activities,\" says Rosenkrantz. \"They're also, we think, doing some things with research papers and other kinds of activities with homework maybe where they're getting some information online and they really shouldn't be.\" Nearly a quarter of the kids (23 percent) night do things their parents would not agree.
So how does a modern parent deal with this type of situation? \"The first thing we strongly recommend is that parents
spend fine with their children online,\" Rosenkrantz, says. \"Sit down with them and understand what they're doing. Secondly, have a dialogue about it. Have a dialogue about what's an acceptable activity, what's an unacceptable activity, and set some ground rules-time online, things you can and can't do. Really have those conversations. That's the most important .\" There are a lot of bad people on the Internet. That's why it's so important for parents to know what their kids are doing online.
1.The data(数据)in the second paragraph are used to show . A.parents don't exactly know kids' online activities B.time spent online changes with children's ages C.children always spend too much time online D.children spend more time online than their parents 2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Some kids surveyed may go against their parents' rules. B.Most parents know what their kids are doing online. C.Special home computers are being made by Symantec. D.Parents are too busy to pay attention to their kids.
3.In Rosenkrantz's opinion, the key to the situation is that parents should . A.shorten their kids' time spent online B.know their kids' online activities C.use security software in computers D.have a dialogue with their kids 4.What's the purpose of the passage?
A.To advertise a piece of useful security software. B.To call parents' attention to kids' online behaviour. C.To warn children of the risks online activities. D.To give reasons for kids' bad Internet habits.

16、When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a
sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so ifyou make a wish, it will come true.

There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”
People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bringthema lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole of good luck.

18、On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.
It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.
No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳头)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.
The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.
It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts. 1.How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree? A.By using a special ax. B.By using the power of nature.
C.By using a mysterious power. D.By yelling at the tree for a month. 2.From Paragraph 3 , we learn that the writer seems to be . A.a kind man B.a nice father
C.a busy husband D.an impatient boss 3.What does the writer think about yelling in life?
A.It's good for everything. B.It solves traffic problems. C.It makes machines work. D.It does no good to people. 4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Yelling can solve all problems.
B.Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.
C.It ' s common for people to yell at things around them. D.Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees. 5.What does the story want to tell us?
A.Yelling hurts both sides. B.Everyone likes yelling.
C.Solomon Islanders are very stupid. D.Every living thing has its own spirit. Ⅴ.书面表达
