One day, a man saw an old lady sitting inside her car at the side of the road. Though it was dark, he could see she needed help. So he stopped his car and walked towards her. The old lady was worried, even though she noticed the smile on his face. Was he going to hurt her? \"I'll help you start your car, madam. By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson,\" he said.

While Anderson was fitting a spare tire<备胎> to her car, the lady began to talk to him. She thanked him much for coming to help.

A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in and a waitress came over with a sweet smile. The old lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the pains and aches change her smile when she served her.

It's not like Talia Randle grew up dreaming of being the fastest grocery bagger in the West.

But when the 17-year-old university student started her first job this summer as a clerk at Metropolitan Market in Washington, US, her natural skills appeared, according to the store manager Glen Hasstedt, her coach.

Hasstedt has trained four Washington State Best Baggers. He said every great bagger has a few key talents.

\"They have to be fast, have great hand-eye coordination<协调能力> and be competitive and focused,\" Hasstedt said.

Randle said bagging seemed natural to her and within a week of starting, co-workers were commenting on her speed.

\"I enjoy it,\" Randle said. \"Heavy things should be at the bottom, and everything should be standing up. It's a little bit like Tetris or a puzzle.\"

To represent Metropolitan Market at state level, competitors first have to be the winner in their store. They then compete against the best baggers in each of the company's five other local stores.

In bagging contests, competitors are asked to place a number of items into a certain number of paper bags.

Judging is based on four criteria: how fast the items are bagged, whether the bags are filled in such a way that items inside remain standing when placed on a table, how evenly the weight is distributed among the bags and whether the bagger has a good attitude.

\"In some contests, judges slice away one side of the paper bags to make sure items remain standing,\" Hasstedt said. \"They're also looking to see if the bags are too full for a customer to pick up with one hand,\" he said.

Randle was a favorite to win the state competition. But once there, she was up against several very experienced competitors and had to deal with a loud audience that almost made her nervous.

\"There were people wearing cow bells and yelling,\" she said. \"It was loud.\"

.

\"That's where Hasstedt's mantra ‘just stay focused and don't let things distract you’ came into play,\" she said.

But Randle did what her coach told her and ended up winning the state title, filling three bags in 47 seconds.

58.According to the article, Talia Randle . A. has always dreamed of being the fastest bagger

B.didn't get along well with her workmates in the store C.showed a talent for bagging when she started doing it

D.found it hard to stay focused in the bagging contest

59.Which of the following is one of the rules of bagging contests? A. Different items should not be placed in the same bag.

B.The weight of the filled bags should be similar to each other. C.Speed is the one and only measurement for a skillful bagger. D.The audience has to keep quiet during the bagging contest. 60.Which one is TRUE according to the article?

A. Talia Randle learned how to bag items in her university. B.Bagging needs to use hands and eyes at the same time. C.The heavy items should lie on the top of the bags. D.Baggers must place as many items as they can in the bags. 61.What is the article mainly about?

A. The popularity of bagging contests in the West.

B.How Talia Randle discovered the fun of bagging.

C.Glen Hasstedt's secret training method for champion baggers. D.Talia Randle's road to becoming a star bagger in Washington State.

D

Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choices, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their rights to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies and advertisers, hoping to sell their products.

The endless choices give birth to anxiety in people's lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday

. .

goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.

It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed at which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.

62.What does the author try to argue in Paragraph 1? A. The practice of the choice is difficult. B.The right of the choice is given but at a price.

C.The choice and right exist at the same time. D.The exercise of rights is a luxury.

63.Why do more choices of goods give birth to anxiety?

A. People are likely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion. B.Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.

C.Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the range of choices.

D.Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.

.By using computers as an example, the author wants to prove that . A. products of the latest design flood the market

B.competitions are fierce in high-tech industry C.everyday goods need to be replaced often D.advanced products meet the needs of people 65.What is this passage mainly about?

A. The opinions on people's rights in different countries.

B.The problems about the availability of everyday goods. C.The helplessness in purchasing decisions.

D.The variety of choices in modern society.

really me who did this and that?

Having a time machine would make life easier. Perhaps, it is true. But what I think

more often now is that living without this teaches us responsibility, about oneself, 87. important people to us, about one's own life. And besides, our 88. make us what we are today. Today I am a person leading a healthy, active lifestyle; I try to live each day to fullness . <为了> regret nothing.
