A number of scientist Charles Darwin’s notebooks are kept in the Cambridge University Library in the UK. More than twenty years ago, a pair of small notebooks known as the “Tree of Life” went missing.

The notebooks got the name from Darwin’s 1837 hand-drawn sketch (草图) of his “Tree of Life” idea. They are tiny, just the size of postcards, but their influence on the history of science is great.

At first, the librarians thought the notebooks had simply been placed in a wrong place. But after several years of searching, nothing turned up. In 2020, they were sure that the notebooks had been stolen, and called for the public to ______ the notebooks.

In March, 2022, someone returned the notebooks to the library. The notebooks were placed inside a pink gift bag. And they were in good condition. However, no one knows who has kept them all these years. 54. What do we know about the missing notebooks?

A. They are larger than postcards. B. They were named after a kind of tree. C. They were kept in a library in the US in the past. D. They are important to the development of science. 55. Which phrase can be put in ______ ?

①That little dog you see in the park with its owner might look like it’s just enjoying a game with its favourite tennis ball, but there actually could be some serious education going on. It might be on its way to becoming a detective.

②With great energy and a good sense of smell, dogs have become very valuable in police work. For example, after a disaster, they can help find the lost and the injured(伤者) with their noses quickly.

③But sometimes, it’s not only the living who need to be found. In Canada, a team spent 12 days searching for the body of a missing boater. A trained dog found the man in fifteen minutes. In Pennsylvania, the US, dogs detected (侦察出) the remains of four missing men, even though they were buried (理) twelve-and-a-half feet in the ground.

④But how does a cute dog turn into a super detective? Well, it often starts with that tennis ball or another of the dog’s favourite toys. The toy is stored in a box that also holds a bait (诱饵) with a smell similar to that of the dead human body. The dog will associate (联系) the smell with the toy. Then the dog is trained to find the smell in all kinds of places and in all kinds of weather. When the dog makes a discovery, it gets to play with its favourite toy. So to the dog, it’s just like a “treasure hunt” game, but to humans, it really helps a lot.

⑤These dogs which receive training need to be smart enough to make decisions and to work on their own, but they also need to be loyal to their trainers and obey orders. Moreover, they must be willing to work and energetic enough to be out in the field, sometimes for hours at a time.

57. The word \"education\" in the first paragraph refers to

A. teaching the dog to play games B. training the dog to be a detective C. training the dog to find the way D. teaching the dog owner to train his pet 58. What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A. Terrible murders always happen around the world. B. Cases about missing people have been reduced.

C. It usually takes a long time to train a good dog. D. Dogs are very helpful in finding missing people. 59. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

A. How trainers teach dogs to take orders. B. Why dogs can smell better than humans. C. What training skills are useful to dog trainers. D. What kind of dog is suitable for detective work. 60. Which is the right structure(结构) of the passage?

A.①/②③/④⑤ B.①/②/③④/⑤ C.①②/③④/⑤ D.①②/③/④⑤

The white elephant was considered to be sacred (神圣的) in Siam (now known as Thailand) , and only the king could have a white elephant. And it was even more important than the king in people’s hearts.

Five years ago, Siam did something wrong to deal with the troubles between Great Britain and Siam. Although Great Britain said that the past should be forgotten, the King of Siam decided to send the Queen of Great Britain a present to make up for their mistake. This present must be a royal (皇家的) one. And what present could be more suitable than a royal white elephant?

I was asked to send the present to the Queen. I travelled with my servants (仆人) and the officers and helpers of the elephant by ship. Soon, we arrived in New York Harbour (港口) . I found a place for the royal elephant to stay in Jersey City. The elephant was not well. So it was necessary to stay here for a while in order to let the doctors check the elephant. After it got well, we would go on the journey.

All went well during the first two weeks — then my troubles began. The white elephant was stolen! I was called up in the middle of the night and told about this bad news. For some moments, I was nervous and helpless. Then I calmed down. There was only one thing I could do. I hurried to New York and asked the first policeman I met to lead me to the headquarters(总部) of the police force. Luckily, the famous Inspector(督察员) Blunt was there. He was a man of medium height. What impressed me most about him was his calm expression. This gave me confidence and made me feel hopeful.

I told him everything. But it did not surprise him at all. It seemed like I told him somebody had stolen my dog. He asked me to take a seat and said calmly, “Allow me to think for a moment, please.”

He sat down at his office table and leaned (倚靠) his head on his hand. Several office workers were working at the other end of the room. The only sound I heard during the next six or seven minutes was the sound of their pens. The inspector sat quietly, thinking. Finally, he raised his head, and his looks showed me that his plan was made.

Taken from The Stolen White Elephant

61. From the passage, we know that the white elephant was ______ in Siam.

A. common B. useless C. valuable D. dangerous 62. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A. The long history of Siam. B. The rich cultures of Siam and Great Britain. C. The trade between Siam and Great Britain. D. The reason why Siam sent the white elephant to Great Britain. 63. Which question is NOT answered in the passage?

A. Who was asked to send the white elephant to Great Britain? B. How did the white elephant arrive at New York Harbour? C. How did “I” feel when “I” knew the white elephant was stolen? D. Who stole the white elephant?

64. Which of the following is TRUE about Inspector Blunt?

A. He didn’t take the case seriously. B. He was calm after “I” told him about the case. C. He didn’t win \"my\" trust at first. D. He was well-known for his quick thinking. 65. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The inspector knew what to do next. B. The inspector thought the case was too difficult to solve. C. The inspector had no confidence in himself. D. The inspector didn’t want to tell “me” anything about his plan. 五、任务型阅读(共10小题, 每小题2分, 计20分)
