Microsoft announced this week that its facial-recognition system is now more accurate in identifying people of color, touting (吹嘘)its progress at tackling one of the technology's biggest biases (偏见).
But critics, citing Microsoft's work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, quickly seized on how that improved technology might be used. The agency contracts with Microsoft for cloud-computing tools that the tech giant says is largely limited to office work but can also include face recognition.
Columbia University professor Alondra Nelson tweeted, \"We must stop confusing 'inclusion' in more 'diverse' surveillance (监管)systems with justice and equality.\"
Facial-recognition systems more often misidentify people of color because of a long-running data problem: The massive sets of facial images they train on skew heavily toward white men. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology study this year of the face-recognition systems designed by Microsoft, IBM and the China-based Face++ found that facial-recognition systems consistently giving the wrong gender for famous women of color including Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, Michelle Obama and Shirley Chisholm, the first black female member of Congress.
The companies have responded in recent months by pouring many more photos into the mix, hoping to train the systems to better tell the differences among more than just white faces. IBM said Wednesday it used 1 million facial images, taken from the photo-sharing site Flickr, to build the \"world's largest facial data-set\" which it will release publicly for other companies to use. IBM and Microsoft say that allowed its systems to recognize gender and skin tone with much more precision. Microsoft said its improved system reduced the error rates for darker-skinned men and women by \"up to 20 times,\" and reduced error rates for all women by nine times. Those improvements were heralded(宣布)by some for taking aim at the prejudices in a rapidly spreading technology, including potentially reducing the kinds of false positives that could lead police officers misidentify a criminal suspect.
But others suggested that the technology's increasing accuracy could also make it more marketable. The system should be accurate, \"but that's just the beginning, not the end, of their ethical obligation,\" said David Robinson, managing director of the think tank Upturn.
At the center of that debate is Microsoft, whose multimillion-dollar contracts with ICE came under fire amid the agency's separation of migrant parents and children at the Mexican border. In an open letter to Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella urging the company to cancel that contract, Microsoft workers pointed to a company blog post in January that said Azure Government would help ICE \"accelerate recognition and identification.\" \"We believe that Microsoft must take an ethical stand, and put children and families above profits,\" the letter said. A Microsoft spokesman, pointing to a statement last week from Nadella, said the company's \"current cloud engagement\" with ICE supports relatively anodyne(温和的)office work such as \"mail, calendar, massaging and document management workloads.\" The company said in a statement that its facial-recognition improvements are \"part of our going work to address the
industry-wide and societal issues on bias.\"
Criticism of face recognition will probably expand as the technology finds its way into more arenas, including airports, stores and schools. The Orlando police department said this week that it would not renew its use of Amazon. com's Rekognition system.
Companies \"have to acknowledge their moral involvement in the downstream use of their technology,\"
Robinson said. \"The impulse is that they're going to put a product out there and wash their hands of the consequences. That's unacceptable.\"

If you love eating and drinking for free and are looking to make some pocket money, there's a job in China with your name on it. A new type of online service allows people to hire others to eat or drink their favorite treats, either to cure their boredom or satisfy their appetite without the calories that usually come with it.
Chinese media recently reported on an increasingly popular service on online platform Taobao that's as startling as it is appealing. People can now go online and hire others to consume certain foods and drinks, and ask them to provide video evidence of them eating or drinking the said treats.
Fees usually range from two to nine yuan ($0.30 - $1.35) plus the cost of the food. It's not exactly a get-rich-quick job, but there are quite a rot of people willing to do it for the free treats alone.
\"Bubble tea drinking\" is a particularly popular service, as the chewy tapioca(木薯粉)balls and popping drink is all the rage in Asia these days, but there are also ads from people willing to eat fried chicken or hot pot for anyone willing to pay for them.
Advertised as being \"fat-free\" and \"free of queues\" those who pay for the service will receive the full experience, which includes a 360-degree video of the drink, photos, and a detailed description. Prices of the service are based on the drink's sweetness level, its price, and popularity. Some clients even require a short written review to be sure that the person they hired actually does what they are supposed to.
Sellers explained that most customers buy their \"Bubble tea drinking\" service maybe because they're trying to shake off desires while they're on a diet. Drinking bubble tea by proxy may help customers avoid high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and other health problems that the sugar-laden drink may cause.
So why would anyone pay a total stranger to enjoy a treat rather than consume it themselves? Well, apparently, the online service is so cheap that some people simply do it out of boredom, while others get satisfaction from watching others indulge in their favorite treats.
This indulging-by-proxy service(代享受服务)has received a lot of attention on social media in China, with some people describing it as the job of their dreams. (1)What kind of people may buy the new type of online service? A. Those who are boring.
B. Those who are trying to lose weight. C. Those who love eating and drinking for free. D. Those who are looking to make some pocket money.
(2)Which is the reason for many people being willing to be hired for the new job? A. That they can make a fortune. B. That the foods and drinks are cheap. C. That they can consume the treats for free. D. That they can realize their dreams. (3)Why does the author mention \"bubble tea drinking\" in Paragraph 4? A. To prove that the new type of service online is popular. B. To list an example of the new type of service online C. To show bubble tea is greatly welcome in Asia. D. To promote the new type of service online. (4)What is the main idea of the passage? A. Indulging-by-proxy service online helps lose weight. B. Boredom leads to indulging-by-proxy service online.
C. People hold different opinions on indulging-by-proxy service online. D. Indulging-by-proxy service online is getting increasingly popular. 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)B (4)D

Darrell Blatchley, a marine biologist and environmentalist based in the Philippine city of Davao, received a call from the Philippines, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (渔业与水产资源局) early Friday morning reporting a death of a young whale.
When the necropsy (尸检) was performed, Blatchley told NPR, he was not prepared for the amount of plastic they found in the whale's stomach. \"It was full of plastic nothing but nonstop plastic.\" he said \"It was filled to the point that its stomach was as hard as a baseball.\" That means that this animal has been suffering not for days or weeks but for months or even a year or more,\" Blatchley added.
Blatchley is the founder and owner of the D'Bone Collector Museum, a natural history museum in Davao. In the coming days, the museum will display all the items found in the whale's system. Blatchley and his team work with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and other organizations to assist in rescue and recovery of marine animals.
\"Within the last 10 years, we have recovered 61 whales and dolphins just within the Davao Gulf,\" he said. \"Of them, 57 have died due to man whether they took plastic or fishing nets or
other waste, or gotten caught in pollution — and four were pregnant.\"

When I was a kid, I was the girl who kept the training wheels on my bike as long as possible. Even my younger sister had got rid of them much earlier than me. But as I began to grow older, this changed.
All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be a fun day at school when all of us kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right? No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels?
With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the first big change I'd ever made on my own.
I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma. They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.
I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started to push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!
My confidence soared. This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. My accomplishment would carry me forth to new goals and wins. I realized that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it.

The term \"smiling depression\" —appearing happy to others while actually suffering depressive symptoms—has become increasingly popular. In fact, many people who experience a low mood and a loss of pleasure in activities manage to hide their condition in this way. And these people might be particularly easy to suicide.
While smiling depression is not a technical term that psychologists use,it is certain to be depressed and manage to successfully mask the symptoms. The closest technical term for this condition is \"atypical depression: It can be very hard to spot people suffering depression because they may seem like they don't have a reason to be sad — they have a job, an apartment and maybe even children or a partner. They smile when you greet them and can carry pleasant conversations. In short, they often put on a mask to the outside world while leading seemingly normal and active lives. Inside, however, they often feel hopeless and down, sometimes even having thoughts about ending it all.
People with smiling depression put on a happy face to the outside world, but they can experience a lift in their mood as a result of positive occurrences in their lives. Other symptoms of this condition include overeating, feeling a sense of heaviness in the arms and legs and being
easily hurt by criticism or rejection. They are also more likely to feel depressed in the evening and feel the need to sleep longer than usual. With other forms of depression, however, your mood might be worse in the morning and you might feel the need for less sleep than you are normally used to.
So how can they break this circle? A starting point needs to be known that this condition actually exists and that it's serious. Only when we stop ignoring our problems because we think they're not serious enough can we start making an actual difference. Then we can find purpose by taking the attention away from ourselves and placing it onto something else. Feeling that our lives matter is finally what gives us purpose and meaning — and this can make a significant difference for our mental health and well-being.
(1)What do we know about people suffering smiling depression? A. They are wearing masks all day. B. They are difficult to get along with. C. They lead an abnormal life actually. D. Most of them commit suicide. (2)What does the underlined word \"atypical\" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. representative B. common C. hidden D. formal (3)Compared with smiling depression, people suffering other depressions . A.may feel sleepless
B.feel more depressed in the evening C.are tired of heaviness in the arms D.may eat more food
(4)What can we do to overcome smiling depression? A.Never talk about smiling depression and ignore its existence. B.Admit the condition and pay attention to ourselves. C.Value the importance of our life and enjoy it. D.Find out the problem and place it onto somebody else. 【答案】 (1)C (2)C (3)A (4)C

A study published in the journal Science reveals that since 1970, bird populations in the United States and Canada have declined by 29 percent, or almost 3 billion birds. The results show tremendous losses across diverse groups of birds and habitats - from iconic songsters such as meadowlarks to long-distance migrants such as swallows.
\"These data are consistent with what we're seeing elsewhere,\" said coauthor Peter Marra,
former head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. It's urgent to address ongoing threats, both because the domino effects (多米诺效应)can lead to the decay of ecosystems that humans depend on for our own health and livelihoods and because people all over the world cherish birds in their own right. Can you imagine a world without birdsong?\"
Evidence for the declines emerged from detection of migratory birds in the air from 143 NEXRAD weather radar stations across the continent in a period spanning over 10 years as well as from nearly 50 years of data collected through multiple monitoring efforts on the ground. Citizen-science participants also contributed a lot, for the analysis included citizen-science data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey coordinated by the Canadian Wildlife Service- the main sources of long-term, large-scale population data for North American birds.
The study noted that the largest factor driving these declines is likely the widespread loss and degradation of habitat, especially due to agricultural intensification and urbanization. Other studies have documented death from predation (捕食)by domestic cats; collisions with glass, buildings, and other structures; and pervasive (普遍的)use of pesticides associated with widespread declines in insects, an essential food source for birds. Climate change is expected to compound these challenges by altering habitats and threatening plant communities that birds need to survive.
\"It's a wake-up call that we've lost more than a quarter of our birds in the U.S. and Canada,\" said coauthor Adam Smith from Environment and Climate Change Canada. But the crisis reaches far beyond our individual borders. Many of the birds that breed in Canadian backyards migrate through or spend the winter in the U.S. and places farther south - from Mexico and the Caribbean to Central and South America. What our birds need now is an historic, hemispheric effort that unites people and organizations with one common goal: bringing our birds back. (1)The underlined word \"decay\" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to____. A.improvement B.worsening C.changed D.threat
(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.New findings of the research. B.Applications of the research. C.Data sources of the research. D.Methods of the research.
(3)What Adam Smith said mainly implies that___________. A.bird populations in America and Canada dropped by a quarter B.the bird population crisis is not just within individual borders C.there is little individuals can do to help increase bird populations D.the solution to solving the crisis needs international cooperation 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)D

China and India are leaders in improving global(全球的) tree cover, a new study based on NASA research showed.
They took a 31.8% part together of the total global new leaf area between 2000 and 2017. China played a major role, adding 25% to this increase, and India added 6.8%, followed by Canada and Russia. The study in the Nature Sustainability journal shows that more than 5.5 million square kilometers of green leaf area was added globally. Since 2000, there has been a five-percent increase in global green cover, it said.
\"The greening over the last twenty years shows an increase in leaf area on plants and trees which is as large as the area of the entire Amazon rainforest,\" Chi Chen, a Boston University researcher and lead of the study told Nature Sustainability. Large plantation activities to protect forests in China contributed nearly 42% to the country's green cover, and agriculture added another 32%. In India, 82% of the increase in leaf area was because of agriculture.
\"China and India take up one-third of the greening, but hold only nine percent of the planet's land area covered in green plants,\" Chi Chen told NASA Earth Observatory. \"That is a surprising finding, considering the land degradation(退化) in countries with large populations.\"
Boston University's research team first detected an increase in global green cover in the 1990s but were unsure about what contributed to the increase. Finally, with the help of NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites research, they managed to find out the increase in leaf cover from different areas and places.

Garbage sorting has become a hot issue around China, especially after Shanghai began carrying out a regulation on July 1.
Beijing, as a forerunner in environmental protection, has thus been expected to follow suit. The capital of the country has long been campaigning for sorting and recycling household waste, as part of its environmental drive for sustainable growth, local media reported.
The current regulation gives garbage sorting responsibilities to government departments,
property management groups and other organizations. It also gives rules for companies, outlining how they're responsible for waste collection, transportation and treatment. Only individuals are not subject to responsibilities.
The long-awaited revision will soon change the situation, \"Taking out the trash without sorting it properly will be illegal,\" said Sun Xinjun, director of the Beijing Commission of Urban Management. In Shanghai, violators are now fined up to 200 yuan ($30)for trash-sorting violations. The maximum fine in Beijing will not be less than that, he said.
The Beijing city government first set out to promote garbage sorting in 2009. Authorities have since called on citizens to sort their household waste into four types-recyclable waste, kitchen trash, dangerous waste and others-and leave it in a corresponding dustbin or trash can. Blue-colored dustbins signify items within are recyclable, green represents kitchen trash, red corresponds to dangerous materials and grey to other waste.
To promote the awareness of garbage sorting and expand the base of participants, authorities have employed workers to help residents on the spot. With intelligent devices, those who throw in recyclable waste at given sites will be rewarded with bonus points, which can be used to buy daily goods. At some communities, there are no color-coded dustbins. Instead, a scheduled garbage collection service is offered to help improve the environment. In other communities, workers offer a door-to-door service to collect recyclables or kitchen waste.
Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group has been promoting new garbage sorting facilities such as recycling cabinets and smart kitchen waste trash cans since 2016, Xinhua News Agency reported. Nearly 26,000 metric tons of household waste is generated across Beijing on a daily basis and 29 terminal garbage disposal facilities are working at full capacity. Nearly 9.3 million tons of household waste was processed in the city last year.
(1)According to the passage, which dustbins should some used coke cans be thrown into? A. Grey-colored dustbins. B. Red-colored dustbins. C. Green-colored dustbins. D. Blue-colored dustbins. (2)We can learn from the passage that ________. A. new technology has been applied to help deal with garbage
B. Beijing carried out a more severe rule on garbage sorting than Shanghai C. the change of the current regulation has aroused objection among citizens D. the amount of household waste in Beijing is far from something disturbing (3)What is the best title for the text? A.How to Sort Garbage in China B.The Current Regulation in Beijing C.Garbage Collection in Beijing D.Waste Recycling Project Counts

A story posted by The New York Post Monday tells the tale of Katrina Holte, a Hillsboro woman who quit her job to cosplay a 1950s housewife.
Let me start by expressing admiration to Holte for using her 2019 freedoms to follow her 1950s dreams. Everyone should be so lucky as to get to decide what they wear and how they spend their time. That's the future our foremothers fought for.
But as much fun as I am sure she is having living a vintage (复古的) life, which literally includes watching shows like \"I Love Lucy\" and listening to vinyl recordings (刻录碟片), I think it's important to remember that being a 1950s housewife was actually totally awful, and something our grandmothers and mothers fought against.
For example, once I called my grandma and asked her for her recipe for Cloud Biscuits, these delicious biscuits she used to make that we would cover with butter and homemade raspberry jam on Thanksgiving.
\"Why would you want that?\" she said. \"Go to the store. Go to the freezer section. Buy some pre-made biscuits and put them in the oven.\"
She straight-up refused to give me the recipe, because it was hard and took a long time to make. In her mind, it was a waste of time.
Getting off the phone, it occurred to me that spending every day of your life serving a husband and five children wasn't fun at all. And then there are the grandchildren who eventually come
along demanding Cloud Biscuits, a whole new expanded set of people to feed.
She was basically a slave to those hungry mouths, cooking scratch meals three times a day. When she wasn't trapped in the kitchen, she had to keep the house clean, make sure she looked good enough to be socially acceptable, and make sure her kids and husband looked good enough to be socially acceptable. And she had no days off.
I know my grandma loves her kids and her grandkids, her husband and the life she led, but man, it must have been a lot of thankless, mindless labor.
No wonder everyone went all-in on processed foods when they came around. Imagine the nice break something like a microwave dinner would give a woman working, unpaid, for her family every single day?
I also had another grandma. She was a scholar who helped found the Center for the Study of Women in Society at University of Oregon. She was a pioneering second-wave feminist who wrote books, gave lectures and traveled the world.
But, she did all of that after divorcing my grandpa, when most of her kids were out of the house. Back then, in the 1950s and the 1960s, there was no illusion about women \"having it all\". How could that even possibly happen? If you were taking care of a family, waiting on your husband, you had no time to follow your dreams, unless you made that your dream. A lot of women took that approach. We call it Stockholm Syndrome now.
And of course, these women I am talking about are upper-middle-class white women. Romanticizing the 1950s is especially disgusting when you think about how women of color and poor women were treated back then, and the lack of education and choices available to them. Because the women in this country demanded something approaching equality, Holte has the chance to live out her fantasy. Not every woman in America is so lucky.
We still don't have pay equality and in many states, we still don't have autonomy over our own bodies. Poor women and women of color still lack the opportunities of their wealthy and white peers.
And while it's getting better, women are still expected to be responsible for the emotional labor of running a household and raising the children.
But at least we can get jobs. At least we don't have to sew our own clothes, wear a full face of makeup every day and spend hours making Cloud Biscuits some ungrateful kid will wolf down, barely remembering to say thank you.
(1)According to the author, what is the future our foremothers fought for? A. Watching shows like \"I Love Lucy\" and listening to vinyl recordings. B. Having the freedom to make choices in their daily life. C. Making Cloud Biscuits for their kids and husbands. D. Making sure their kids and husbands socially acceptable.
(2)What does the underlined word \"that\" in paragraph 13 refer to? A. Writing books, giving lectures and traveling the world. B. Divorcing husband when kids were out of house. C. Taking care of a family and waiting on husband. D. Women's illusion about \"having it all\".
(3)What does the \"Stockholm Syndrome\" in paragraph 14 really mean in the passage? A. Women have been used to the unfair treatment at home B. Women nowadays like the way of life in the 1950s. C. Victims end up sympathizing with the abusers. D. Women have the chance to live out their dreams.
(4)The author thinks of the life of a 1950s housewife as ________.
A. fantastic B. admirable C. awful D. unforgettable (5)What can we learn from the passage? A. It was a waste of time to give grandchildren the recipe.
B. All women are not lucky to follow their own dreams in America now. C. Housewives received recognition for their efforts from family members. D. The upper-middle-class white women did a better job in running the household. (6)What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage? A. To show great appreciation to her grandmas.
B. To call on housewives to claim the pay for the housework they undertake.
C. To draw readers' attention to the situations women face, especially those poor and of color. D. To arouse women's awareness of equal pay at work. 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)A (4)C (5)B (6)C

Alison Malmon was trapping up (完成) the end of her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, US when she got the news: Her older brother Brian, a student at Columbia University, was suffering from mental illness.
Inspired by this, Malmon formed a group at her university to empower (使能够) students to talk openly about mental health. It soon blossomed into a national organization that today has more than 450 campus chapters. Leaders with the organization spend their time talking with college students about the pressure that today's young people face.
\"What you hear often is just a need to be perfect,\" said Malmon, \"and a need to present oneself as perfect.\"
And a new study in the UK proved that this need for perfectionism is simply part of today's society. In the study, two researchers studied more than 40,000 students from the US, Canada, and the UK. They found that what they called \"socially prescribed(社会定向型的) perfectionism\" increased by a third between 19 and 2016.
Lead researcher Thomas Curran said that while so many of today's young people try to present a perfect appearance online, social media isn't the only reason behind this trend. Instead, he said, it may be driven by competition in modern society, meaning young people can't avoid being sorted and ranked in both education and employment. That comes from new norms(准则) like greater numbers of college students, standardized testing and parenting that increasingly emphasizes success in education.
For example, in 1976, half of high school seniors expected to get a college degree of some kind.
By 2008, more than 80 percent expected the same. The researchers also said changes in parenting styles over the last two decades might have had an impact. As parents feel increased pressure to raise successful children, they in turn pass their \"achievement anxieties\" onto their kids through \"excessive(过多的) involvement in their child's routines, activities or emotions\" Those in the mental health community like Malmon say they're concerned about the impact the culture of perfectionism has on mental health on campuses. \"Mental health has truly become this generation's social justice issue,\" she said. \"It's our job to equip them with the tools and to let people know that it's not their fault.\" (1)What is the article mainly about? A. The effects of the culture of perfectionism. B. Research into the trend of perfectionism.
C. A group dedicated to helping people stay mentally healthy. D. Various pressures that today's young people are facing.
(2)What inspired Alison Malmon to start a group related to mental health? A.Her brother's mental illness. B.Her project during the freshman year. C.The pressure she had experienced. D.Her strong interest in mental health.
(3)What does Malmon think is a way to help young people manage the pressure of perfectionism?
A.Enabling them to know what is to blame for their pressure. B.Lowering their expectations of themselves. C.Reducing parents involvement in their children's life. D.Making them aware of what true social justice is. 【答案】 (1)B (2)A (3)A

I'm a storyteller. And I would like to tell you a few personal stories.
I grew up reading British and American children's books. When I began to write, I wrote exactly the kinds of stories I was reading: All my characters were white and blue-eyed, they ate apples and talked a lot about the weather, despite the fact that I lived in Nigeria. We ate mangoes, and we never talked about the weather. Because all I had read were books in which characters were foreign, I had become convinced that books by their very nature had to have foreigners in them. Things changed when I discovered African books. Because of writers like Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye, I went through a mental shift in my idea of literature. I realized that people like me, girls with skin the color of chocolate, could also exist in literature. I started to write about things I recognized. So what the discovery of African writers did for me was this: It saved me from having a single story of what books are. The year I turned eight, we got a new house boy Fide from a nearby rural village. The only thing my mother told us about him was that his family was very poor. And when I didn't finish my dinner, my mother would say,\"Finish your food! Don't you know? People like Fide's family have nothing.\" So I felt enormous pity for Fide's family. Then one Saturday, we went to his village to visit, and his mother showed us a beautifully patterned basket that his brother had made. I was astonished. It had not occurred to me that anybody in his family could actually make something. Their poverty was my single story of them.
Years later, when I left Nigeria to go to university in the United States, my American roommate asked where I had learned to speak English so well, and was confused when I said that Nigeria happened to have English as its official language. What struck me was this: She had felt sorry for me even before she saw me. My roommate had a single story of Africa: a single story of catastrophe.
Of course, Africa is a continent full of catastrophes. But there are other stories that are not about catastrophe, and it is very important, it is just as important, to talk about them. The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar. So what if my mother had told us that Fide's family was poor and hardworking? What if we had an African television network that broadcast diverse African stories all over the world? What if my roommate knew about my Nigerian publisher, Muhtar Bakare, a remarkable man who left his job in a bank to follow his dream and start a publishing house? What if my roommate knew about my friend Funmi Iyanda, a fearless woman who hosts a TV show, and is determined to tell the stories that we prefer to forget?
My Nigerian publisher and I have just started a non-profit called Farafina Trust, and we have big dreams of building libraries and providing books for state schools, and also of organizing lots of
workshops in reading and writing, for all the people who are eager to tell our many stories. Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity. When we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise.
(1)What is probably people's first impression of the writer when it comes to her nationality? A. She mainly eats apples and mangoes. B. She may not speak fluent English.
C. She comes from a place free of catastrophes. D. She prefers stories based on foreign characters.
(2)The underlined phrase \"a mental shift\" in Paragraph 2 refers to the writer's____. A. discovery of African books with characters of her skin color B. acquaintance with local African writers like Chinua Achebe C. realization that not only foreign characters exist in literature D. change that she started to write about things she recognized
(3)How many personal stories has the writer mentioned in the passage? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
(4)The writer uses several single stories in the passage to illustrate that the single story____. A. matters in keeping listeners well informed B. tends to convey a prejudiced idea to listeners C. gets increasingly popular among story tellers D. fails to produce a lasting effect on listeners
(5)The writer lists many \"what ifs\" in Paragraph 6 to____. A. emphasize our differences rather than similarities B. indicate the way that stories are used to break dignity C. show the hardship of recognizing our equal humanity D. stress the importance of telling diverse, balanced stories
(6)Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. The danger of the single story B. The importance of telling stories C. The single stories that matter D. Stories that can repair broken dignity 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)B (4)B (5)D (6)A
I realized that people like me, girls with skin the color of chocolate, could also exist in literature.“可知作者的思想转变是她意识到像她这样有着巧克力肤色的女生也是可以在文学作品中有一席之地的。
故选A。

\"If they hated me they didn't talk to me about it,\" says a young German manager at a media firm in Frankfurt. Still, he says it was noticeable that when an employee 20 years older than him thanked him for buying lunch he had to swallow twice before adding the word \"boss\".
Older workers sometimes envy being managed by a younger colleague. Precocious (老成的) youngsters, too, can feel awkward about bossing their elders around. But in Germany a shortage of skilled workers means that such situations are becoming even more common.
The country's population is projected to shrink. As more Germans retire, fewer youngsters are entering the work-place to replace them. As a share of the working population the number of 15-to-24-year-olds has fallen by ten percent since the 1980s, says the German Federal Employment Agency. Firms competing to hire young talent have to promote them earlier as a result. A paper by professors at the university of Cambridge and WHU, a German business school, to be published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, suggests this could be a problem.
As in many countries, German work-places are legally obliged to overlook age when deciding whom to promote. Yet according to Jochen Menges, one of the authors, when an ordinary worker leap-frogs a more experienced one it can leave the latter with feelings of \"anger, fear and disgust.\" People tend to judge their own standing by the success of their peers, and to see failure in being bossed about by someone younger. The relationship between feelings of anxiety and the age of the boss is clear, according to Mr Menges. A manager who is younger by one year is somewhat unsettling; a gap of 20 years is far more discouraging.
German firms certainly shouldn't return to a system in which age equals to rank. But young people tend to be sensitive about managing upwards. And older workers should be encouraged to see the bright side of learning new skills. Daimler, a big German car firm, says it promotes age- mixed teams, so that knowledge can be transferred between generations. It also supports young managers by asking retired employees to provide temporary support.
(1)For what does the author mention a young German manager and his experience in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To present an argument. C. To attract readers' interest. D. To describe his own idea.
(2)Why are some precocious youngsters bossing their elders around in Germany? A. Precocious youngsters are all skilled workers. B. Such situations are becoming more common. C. Fewer youngsters would like to do hard work. D. Companies compete fiercely to hire young talent.
(3)In which of the following situations might an employee regard himself as a failure according to the passage?
A. When he has to decide whom to promote. B. When he leap-frogs a more experienced worker. C. When he is being bossed about by someone younger. D. When he experiences feelings of anger, fear and disgust.
(4)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean? A. A younger boss is more likely to be nervous and anxious. B. An employee with a younger boss tends to suffer from anxiety. C. There is a connection between anxiety and the age of promotion. D. The age of the boss and anxiety are closely related. (5)What can we learn from the passage? A. Qualified workers should be promoted to boss. B. Older workers should support younger managers. C. Older workers are no better than younger colleagues. D. You are never too old to learn, or too young to manage. 【答案】 (1)A (2)D (3)C (4)B (5)D

Older workers sometimes envy being managed by a younger colleague. Precocious youngsters, too, can feel awkward about bossing their elders around. But in Germany a shortage of skilled workers means that such situations are becoming even more common.“年长的员工有时会羡慕被年轻的同事管理。 故选A。
15-to-24-year-olds has fallen by ten percent since the 1980s, says the German Federal Employment Agency. Firms competing to hire young talent have to promote them earlier as a result.“德国联邦职业介绍所表示,自上世纪80年代以来,15至24岁的年轻人数量下降了10%。
People tend to judge their own standing by the success of their peers, and to see failure in being bossed about by someone younger.“人们倾向于根据同龄人的成功来判断自己的地位,并认为被年轻人左右是失败的。
A manager who is younger by one year is somewhat unsettling; a gap of 20 years is far more discouraging. “一个年轻一岁的经理有点让人不安;20年的差距更让人沮丧。可推知老板年龄越年轻,员工的焦虑感越明显,故可推知划线句子意思是:拥有年轻老板的员工往往会感到焦虑。故选B。
(5)考查主旨大意。根据最后一段中的”But young people tend to be sensitive about managing upwards. And older workers should be encouraged to see the bright side of learning new skills. Daimler, a big German car firm, says it promotes age- mixed teams, so that knowledge can be transferred between generations. It also supports young managers by asking retired employees to provide temporary support.“但年轻人往往对向上管理很敏感。

A university in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has installed facial recognition systems in classrooms to monitor students' behavior, sparking a heated debate online. China Pharmaceutical University recently installed the systems in two pilot classrooms as well as school gates, dormitory entrances, the library and laboratory buildings.
Xu Jianzhen, director of the university's library and information center, told TbePaper.cn that
the systems will help teachers check student attendance and monitor behavior during the lectures. \"In the past, some students just checked their attendance and ditched the class or asked other students to check the attendance for them. Now with facial recognition, that would no longer be a problem,\" he said. \"The moment you enter the classroom, the camera will monitor you all the way through and can tell how long you lower your head, whether you're playing with a smart phone, whether you're dozing off or reading other books,\" he added.
The news has raised wide debate on Chinese social media, with many questioning if the cameras will violate students' privacy. A Sina Weibo user said: \"I oppose such methods, and it is not clear whether the systems are developed by the school itself or by third parties. If it is the latter, is there any regulation of security? Where will the information be sent and stored?\" Gan Xiangsi, a senior student from the university, said she welcomed the systems being applied in dormitories and libraries as this can help prevent personal belongings being stolen, but it is not necessary to use such technology in the classroom. \"If the teacher teaches well, the students will be interested,\" she said. \"On the contrary, this kind of monitoring will make everyone feel resistant.\"
China Pharmaceutical University is not the first university to use facial recognition technology on campus. Many universities across the country have installed cameras at campus entrances to ensure safety. But many are also hesitant when it comes to applying such technology in classrooms.
\"This issue has been debated for quite a long time,\" Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, told China National Radio. According to Chu, teachers and students who are under observation might not behave as they normally would since they know they are being watched. \"Cameras should not be installed in classrooms merely for effective teaching purposes,\" Chu said, as teachers are also being observed. He agreed that \"students' privacy needs to be protected\". He also said that not putting classrooms under control is an important principle. \"If you don't follow this principle, students will falsify and disguise their state of listening, and teachers may also not perform as well. Then real teaching will not occur,\" he added.
(1)Which of the following is NOT the function of facial recognition systems? A.To help check student attendance. B.To help monitor student behavior. C.To help ensure student safety. D.To help protect student privacy
(2)What does the underlined word \"ditch\" in paragraph 2 mean? A.abandon B.attend C.dislike D.enjoy
(3)What's Chu Zhaohui's attitude towards installing cameras in classrooms? A.favorable B.indifferent
C.unfavorable D.neutral
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing this passage? A.To introduce the function of facial recognition systems. B.To express his preference for facial recognition systems. C.To express his strong dislike for facial recognition systems.
D.To introduce people's different attitudes to facial recognition systems. 【答案】 (1)D (2)A (3)C (4)D

A recent study finds that the dirt on the ground is likely to worsen climate change. Researchers have shown that warmer temperatures are heating the soil, which is causing microbes (微生物) to become more active and release more of the soil's carbon into the atmosphere. These soil
changes can potentially contribute to even higher temperatures.
Scientists studied device readings, soil measurements, plant growth details and satellite observations from around the world. Their work is the most complete study on the subject. They found a sharp increase in carbon released into the atmosphere by bacteria and fungi (真菌) in soil from 1990 to 2014. Researchers explain that the carbon comes from the dead plants and leaves the microbes eat. As temperatures rise, the microbes eat more. And the more they eat, the more carbon can be made into carbon dioxide and released into the atmosphere.
This uncontrolled cycle speeds up and intensifies climate change. Overall, soil releases about nine times more carbon than human activities. But that is part of a natural cycle: the amount of carbon released into the air is about equal to the carbon oceans and plants take in.
However, carbon released from fossil fuel causes an imbalance. Burning coal, oil and natural gas puts more carbon into the atmosphere than nature can take in. The additional carbon heats the air and soil. And as the air and soil get hotter, the earth will release more carbon than it has been holding.
If something isn't done, we are really in trouble. Proper soil conservation can help keep more carbon in soil. Conservation methods include avoiding turning the soil, covering off-season crops and leaving crop deposits on the ground.
(1)Which word can best describe the scientists' research data? A.Rich. B.Rare. C.Limited. D.Difficult.
(2)What does the underlined word \"intensifies\" in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Causes. B.Demands. C.Strengthens. D.Shows.
(3)What mainly causes the soil's temperature to rise? A.Active bacteria. B.Human activities. C.The overuses of soil. D.The wastes of fossil fuels.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the passage? A.Warmer soil and more carbon. B.The soil and the environment. C.The microbes and the temperatures. D.Hotter air and warmer environment. 【答案】 (1)A (2)C (3)B (4)A
根据第二段中的“Scientists studied device readings, soil measurements, plant growth details and satellite observations from around the world. Their work is the most complete study on the subject.” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“This uncontrolled cycle speeds up and intensifies climate change.”
根据第五段中的“However, carbon released from fossil fuel causes an imbalance. Burning coal, oil and natural gas puts more carbon into the atmosphere than nature can take in. The additional carbon heats the air and soil. And as the air and soil get hotter, the earth will release more carbon than it has been holding”然而,化石燃料释放的碳造成了不平衡。
根据第一段中的“soil changes can potentially contribute to even higher temperatures.” 末段提出了“Proper soil conservation can help keep more carbon in soil.” A项Warmer soil and more carbon. 故选A。
How does an ecosystem(生态系统)work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物)always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction(灭绝)of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s,
scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species---including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists says because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点), it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
(1)What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs? A. The living habits of species in food webs. B. The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems. C. The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems. D. The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.
(2)A strong link is found between two species when a predator______. A. has a wide food choice B. can easily find new prey C. sticks to one prey species D. can quickly move to another place
(3)What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline? A. The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators. C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged. D. The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes. (4)What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4? A. Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems. B. Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats. C. Species of commercial value dominate other species. D. Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.
(5)How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance? A. By getting illegal practices under control. B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal. D. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action. 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)D (4)A (5)D

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters, \"The house next door is on fire!\" He went to investigate. That's when he saw two women and a girl hysterical (歇斯底里的)on their porch.
\"The baby's in there!\" one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then , instinctively ran inside. \"The baby\" was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell's three youngest kids, then 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara's aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like \"running into a bucket of black paint,\" Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been hazardous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺疾病), they were life-threatening. He was the last person who should have run into a burning building--- he has lung disease. But that didn't stop
him.
After a few minutes in the smoke filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. \"Where is Tiara?\" he asked desperately.\" The second floor.\" her aunt shouted back.
Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer, \"Well, Lord, this is it. You gotta help me, because I'm not coming out without that little girl.\" Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time.
The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
\"Baby girl, where are you?\" His throat and lungs burned as if he'd inhaled fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. ①.Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An ominous thought crossed his mind: I'm probably gonna die up here.
Finally he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. ②Her body was limp and she wasn't breathing. He scooped her into his arms and stood. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch.
③. A voice told him, \"You have to breathe for her.\" He started CPR -the first time he'd ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a soot-filled cough came from Tiara's throat. Surrell gave five more breaths. She coughed again. Her eyes flickered. He gave one final breath. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.
④.Their eyes met. Surrell hugged her tight and said, \"Uncle's got you.\" Soon after, his throat closed off.
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later, having suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was released from the hospital after a few days. The fire exacerbated Surrell's pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. \"It's a small price to pay,\" he says. \"I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn't give it a second thought.\"
(1)Michael Surrell ran to save \"the baby\" mainly because______. A.he was on the scene casually B.he was driven by instinct C.his daughter was in danger D.his own house was at risk
(2)Why should Surrell be the last person to run into a burning building? A.The fire department had been called. B.He was years old at that time. C.The condition was life-threatening. D.He had chronic pulmonary disease.
(3)In the course of rescue, Surrell______. A.had to move out for breath because of smoke B.was prevented by the overwhelming smoke C.made it to the second floor without any trouble D.could clearly hear the sound made by the baby
(4)Which blank could the sentence \"Then a weak but distinct voice emerged\" be best put in? A.① B.② C.③ D.④
(5)From the last paragraph, we can learn that______. . A.Surrell came back to life a week later B.Tiara had to stay in hospital for weeks C.Surrell's disease became more serious D.Tiara needed further extra medication
(6)What can be a suitable title for the passage? A.Breathe for Her B.Struggle to survive C.A small price to pay D.A man with lung disease 【答案】 (1)B (2)D (3)A (4)A (5)C (6)A
根据第二段中的“Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then , instinctively ran inside.”
根据第三段中的“but for Surrell, who has chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺疾病),they were life-threatening” 但对于患有慢性阻塞性肺疾病的Surrell来说,当时的火势对他来说是危及生命的,所以Surrell是最不应该冲进着火大楼的人,故选D。
根据第四段中的“After a few minutes in the smoke filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath.”
第一个空前“All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood.” A“Then a weak but distinct voice emerged” 然后出现了一个微弱但清晰的声音,句子中的Then在时间上承接前一句,空格后一句“Still unable to see” 还是看不见,承接选项A“一个微弱但清晰的声音”,可以判断听到声音但还是看不见人,故选A。
根据最后一段中的“The fire exacerbated Surrell's pulmonary condition.”
根据倒数第三段中的“A voice told him, ‘You have to breathe for her.’ He started CPR ... She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.”
I took a journey to New York, US several months ago. It was the first time I had been abroad. It was also the first time I had taken a trip by myself. I had great enthusiasm and high hopes, and I wasn't let down.
It's hard to describe how I felt when I arrived at the airport in New York. Looking at people of different races and nationalities passing by and hearing different languages all around me, I couldn't say anything for a long time. I had never understood the cultural diversity of the US so clearly and closely before.
The following days were even more impressive. We integrated(融入)into the forest of concrete and cement(混凝土和水泥). We waved to the Statue of Liberty; we looked down at the busy island of Manhattan; we looked at well-known universities—Harvard of ancient Egypt. Then we visited some well-known university—Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia—each with its own appealing and time-honored history. But what all these universities have in common is their peaceful academic atmospheres witch you could feel everywhere. I was impressed by the libraries, decorated just like cathedrals(教堂), and the laboratories just next to the classroom. My dream is to return to those places as an international student.
Finally came our destinations—the Model United Nations conference at the University of Chicago. Students from various countries arrived to act as United Nations delegations and share their opinions about global issues.
As a non-native speaker, I felt that competing against native speakers was a very tough task. But it was also a rare change to improve my English and I couldn't throw it away. With perseverance and devotion. I got used to talking to other delegations naturally. Although I didn't win any awards, the chairman praised me at the closing ceremony for my excellent performance. That made me feel really proud.
This trip brought me unforgettable and valuable experiences that will benefit me forever.

If American waterways had ever been voted on the yearbook, the Buffalo River could easily have been named Ugliest. It could be hard to find hope there. It took decades for public
perception of the river to shift. But activist citizens, who collaborated with industry, government, and environment groups never gave up on their polluted river—the Buffalo River gradually went from being considered a lost cause to a place worth fighting for. And by now the cleaned—up water is one of Buffalo'S biggest attractions.
By the 1960s, the river was seen as one of the worst sources of pollution pouring into the Great Lakes. The Buffalo River had caught fire many times. The surface had an oily layer, and any fish caught there were not eatable.
The waterway's fate started shifting in the mid-1960s. Stanley Spisiak was a local Polish—American jeweler by day, but by evening he was the kind of guy who'd chase down dumpers(垃圾车)he spotted on the Buffalo River. By 1966 he found himself winning the National Wildlife Federation's \"Water Conservationist of the Year\" award. And before long he got a nickname:\" Mr. Buffalo River. \"But there was only so much he could do—the river was still declared biologically dead in 1969.
Jill Spisiak Jedlicka is his great-grandniece. She picks up where he left off by directing the river's protector organization, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper. Professor Schneekloth and seven friends founded the organization as an all-volunteer nonprofit in 19, after organizing the first river cleanup that year. Today the group employs 27 full-time workers and has helped oversee the Buffalo River's $100 million restoration.
So far, the Buffalo River's water quality has restored, but it is still an ongoing issue, as sewage(污水)can overflow into the river after storms. Habitat restoration continues as well; fish and plantings are still being sampled to measure how well it's gone. (1)What did the Buffalo River use to be?
A. A waterway on the yearbook. B. A river heavily polluted. C. A great attraction of Buffalo's. D. A place worth fighting for. (2)Why was Mr.Spisiak named \"Mr. Buffalo River\"? A. Because his fate shifted in the 1 960s. B. Because he spotted dumpers on the River. C. Because he spared no efforts to protect the river. D. Because the river was declared biologically dead. (3)How long did it take for the river to restore?
A. More than half a century. B. Just four decades. C. About 30 years. D. Only 27 years. (4)What can be a suitable title for this text?
A. The restoration of the Buffalo River B. Stanley Spisiak: The \"Mr.Buffalo River\" C. The future of the Buffalo River D. River protection: A long way to go 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)A (4)A
根据第一段中的”never gave up on their polluted river—the Buffalo River gradually went from being considered a lost cause to a place worth fighting for.“;第二段
中的”By the 1960s,the river was seen as one of the worst sources of pollution pouring into the Great Lakes. The Buffalo River had caught fire many times. The surface had an oily layer, and any fish caught there were not eatable.“可知,the Buffalo River过去是一条被严重污染的河。
Stanley Spisiak was a local Polish—American jeweler by day,but by evening he was the kind of guy who'd chase down dumpers(垃圾车)he spotted on the Buffalo River. By 1966 he found himself winning the National Wildlife Federation's \"Water Conservationist of the Year\"award. And before long he got a nickname: ‘Mr. 根据第一段中的“It took decades for public perception of the river to shift.”公众对这条河的看法改变花了几十年的时间;第二段中的“By the 1960s,the river was seen as one of the worst sources of pollution pouring into the Great Lakes.”到了20世纪60年代,这条河被认为是五大湖最严重的污染源之一。;以及最后一段中的“So far,the Buffalo River's water quality has restored,”到目前为止,布法罗河的水质已经恢复”可知,这条河花了多半个世纪才恢复。故选A。
第一段和第二段说明了the Buffalo River严重受污染的情况,第三、四段介绍了为改变污染状况所做的努力,以及最后一段中的“So far,the Buffalo River's water quality has restored, but it is still an ongoing issue,as sewage(污水)can overflow into the river after storms. Habitat restoration continues as well;fish and plantings are still being sampled to measure how well it's gone.” 故选A。

City trees grow faster and die younger than trees in rural forestry, a new study finds. Over their lifetimes, then, urban trees will likely absorb less CO2 from the air than forest trees.
As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2. However, CO2 is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as/heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning-of fossil(化石)fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases into the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe.
Studies had shown forests readily absorb CO2, but there hadn't been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb CO2 at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out.
To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree's diameter increases as it grows, just as a person's waist size increases as they gain weight. About half the weight of a tree is carbon, research has shown. Most of the rest is water. Over the nine years' tracking, the researchers found city trees
absorbed four times as much carbon from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more CO2. City trees grew faster because they had less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮)in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak. (1)What can he known about CO2 from paragraph 2? A. It is one of the side effects of greenhouses. B. It greatly accelerates the process of global warming. C. It results from the widespread burning of fossil fuels. D. It prevents the earth from becoming unsuitable to live on. (2)Why did researchers track the diameters of trees?
A. To know about their growth rates. B. To find out how much they weigh. C. To check whether they were healthy. D. To assess the carbon amounts in them. (3)What advantage do city trees have over forest trees? A. They are more likely to access growth promoters. B. They can enjoy more water coming from the air. C. They can enjoy more shade from neighbors. D. They are better at competing for light.
(4)What will probably be talked about if the passage is continued? A. How urban trees can live longer. B. Why city living makes trees die young. C. How trees respond to dry soil conditions. D. Why faster-growing trees absorb more C02. 【答案】 (1)D (2)A (3)A (4)B
根据第二段中的“the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2.”
根据第四段中的“To figure on how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮)in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground.”
故选A。

Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife's sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn't decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn't find her.
It was now one o'clock, and the concert began at 2:30. \"Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,\" suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.
By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day. (1)Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law? A. they could not see each other because of the fog. B. Joan had not seen Crown Jewels.
C. They planned to do different things until lunch time.
D. The writer didn't want to go to the concert.
(2)What did the writer plan to do in the afternoon? A. Go to the concert. B. See the Crown Jewels. C. Return to Cambridge. D. Go shopping.
(3)The reason why they didn't all meet for lunch was that _______. A. They lost their way in the fog
B. they forgot to make necessary arrangement
C. they waited at different places and didn't meet each other D. the couple couldn't find the underground station
(4)It's quite clear that for Joan the trip to London had been ________.
A. spilt by the fog B. quite tiring C. rather disappointing D. very enjoyable 【答案】 (1)C (2)A (3)B (4)D

A photography exhibition by French artist San Bartolome entitled Moon Door Dreamers opened in the 798 Art Zone in Beijing on December 10, 2011, presenting a cross-cultural perspective (视角) on ordinary life in the capital city.
Bartolome took these photos in August 2008, and produced a video named Two Worlds, One Dream. These works were displayed in Pingyao, an ancient city in Shanxi Province, under the title Beijing Midsummer Night Dream in September 2010.
The moon doors serve as a keyhole through which one can catch a glimpse of a slice of Beijing life. He got his inspiration from one cycling trip to the southeastern suburb of Beijing, where he
discovered a peculiar street along which a gray brick wall was built to cover the shabby bungalows. These cabins were mostly rented by migrant workers- peddlers, craftsmen, grocers and innkeepers.
Born in 1950, Bartolome has worked as a photographer, stage director. Artistic manager, writer and diplomat. A noted Sinophile, Bartolome frequently visits China for photographic subjects. In the fall of 2003, he joined the French Embassy in Beijing as a cultural attache. His work experience in China from 2003 to 2015 further enhanced his awareness of and love for China. Bartolome not only loves Chinese culture but also the Chinese people. He thinks that Chinese people are kind, welcoming and diverse.
Back from his bike ride to southeastern Beijing, he decided to shoot pictures about ordinary urban lifestyles. He observed dwellers carefully and made friends with them.
After about 30 days and nights that he spent with these common migrants, he created a number of portraits. Meanwhile, he learned more about those rural migrants who earn their living in a city with which they are unfamiliar.
He adopted an optimistic perspective to shoot the sights, and he borrowed the title of one of William Shakespeare s comedy works: A Midsummer Night's Dream. (1)What is the main purpose of the exhibition? A. To present Bartolome's photographic skills. B. To tell us Bartolome's work experience in Beijing.
C. To show us Bartolome's optimistic view on ordinary life in Beijing. D. To build a cross-cultural communication bridge between China and France. (2)What inspires Bartolome to shoot pictures about ordinary urban styles? A. His bike ride to Southeastern suburb of Beijing. B. His work experience in the French Embassy in Beijing. C. His visit to the ancient city of Pingyao.
D. Shakespeare's comedy work: A Midsummer Night's Dream.

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.
Certainly, most of the world's great religions (宗教) order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil (恶行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of pride and self-dependence.
Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver. (1)What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A. Moral deeds of people. B. Religious activities of the church. C. Moral goodness of the giver. D. Arguments on giving to beggars.
(2)What can we infer from the sentence \"But has the world changed?\" in the second paragraph?
A. People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village. B. Some people will not do what was morally right in the past. C. We don't meet with those who need help any more. D. Now it is the government's duty to help the beggars.
(3)Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.
B. Some beggars want money to help their children go to school. C. Some beggars use the money to buy drugs. D. Some beggars have no excuse for begging.
(4)In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ______.
A. the cases can be so different B. there are so many beggars
C. there is so much money wasted D. there are so many different arguments 【答案】 (1)D (2)B (3)B (4)A
根据第三段中的“many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. the money' you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.和there is no real excuse for begging.” 根据最后一段中的“It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently.” 故选A.

Gene technology to benefit people
Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial(皇室) family being a good example, have hereditary(遗传的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep; therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology. (1)What does \"these two killers\" in the second paragraph refer to? A. Gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases. B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby. C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease. D. Hereditary diseases and cancer.
(2)What's the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases. B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies. C. Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby. D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out.
(3)In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases? A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days. B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it. C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.
D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.
(4)What is the main purpose of writing this passage? A. Expressing the writer's idea that gene technology will benefit people B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology
C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity 【答案】 (1)C (2)A (3)B (4)A
根据第二段中的“The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease.” 由此可知,these two killers 指的是上文做的cancer and heart disease.
根据第三段中的“In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and a healthy child will be born.” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born”科学家只需要找到错误的基因和纠正它,和一个健康的孩子将出生,可知,利用基因技术,科学家发现错误的基因并加以纠正,这样就可以治愈家族病了。
根据标题“Gene technology to benefit people”基因技术造福人类;及最后一段中的“But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.” 故选A。

Positive thinking is a significant element of happiness. In order to become a positive thinker, determination and consistency are important. The first thing to know about positive thinking is
that everyone can do it. With certain cognitive (认知的) and behavioral changes, we can all become positive thinkers. Another important factor is that being a positive thinker does not mean you become numb to anything that is not working properly in your life or is negative - it just means that you approach life and face challenges with a healthier outlook.
Instead of selectively attending to negative events, focus on the positive ones. Then pay attention to the delayed consequences of your behavior rather than the immediate ones. For example, if a job is not going like you want, focus on the fact that you have a job and how you can take your time to make the situation better.
Challenge any internal attributions and see if you compare your behavior to standards that are excessively rigid and perfectionistic. If so, change these and be reasonable with your comparisons. For example, if you constantly compare your weaknesses with other people's strengths, then switch this and compare yourself with those who are doing poorer than you as well. Overall, people who focus more on their strengths than their weaknesses but at the same time are aware of their weaknesses have a healthier self-evaluation result.
When faced with too much fear about a situation, imagine the worst case and visualize a solution for it, then let go of fear. This way, you will be prepared for anything and your fear will not block you from being open and creative to different solutions. For example, if you are constantly worried about losing your job up to a point where it is creating a lot of anxiety and fear and is effecting your performance and your happiness negatively, then think of losing your job, visualize how you will handle it, find solutions in your mind and then let go of the thought and the fear attached to it.
So positive thinkers are better problem solvers and have better interactions. In addition to that, people who are positive thinkers are happier and more satisfied with their life. (1)Why is positive thinking a significant element of happiness? A. It means that one is blind to the troubles and difficulties that exist. B. It means that one constantly compares everything with other people's. C. It means that one is strong in mind and has nothing to be afraid of. D. It means that one approaches life and faces challenges more healthily. (2)What does the text suggest about the job you don't like?
A. Quitting it and finding a better one. B. Keeping and trying to make it better. C. Being negative and numb to it. D. Challenging yourself with a new outlook. (3)What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4? A. Be prepared for the worst: and let go of fear. B. Being constantly worried will lose your job. C. Fear will prevent you being open and creative. D. There is nothing to fear if well prepared. (4)What can be a suitable title for the text?

At 88, my grandmother Vera has dementia and barely recognizes me. But I'm determined to help her age with dignity and grace in her home for as long as she can.
Since 2015, I've been a manager at Honor, a technology company that uses a website and an app to pair professional caregivers (we call them Care Pros) with loved ones who need a hand. I want to make sure we are offering all our clients (客户), including my grandmother, a service that is affordable, with people who are reliable, diverse and skilled. On Sundays. Amy, my grandmother's most-loved Honor professional caregiver, comes over to get her dressed for church. She loves the time she spends with Amy. That's the best gift I can give her and the best gift I can give myself. Care giving can exhaust a family emotionally and physically. At Honor, we're trying to create something that makes it easier for women to be moms, daughters, and sisters all at once. That's why this company was built.
What sets Honor apart from other care giving services is that we're equally focused on treating
the Care Pros well. We pay higher-than-average rates and they can get health benefits and sick leave. Most of our Care Pros are women, and a lot of them arc single mothers. The technology behind our app allows Care Pros to set parameters (参数) based on when, where, and how much they want to work so they can control their schedules. The company also allows continuity of care. Each Care Pro notes in the caregivers' app how the client is feeling or what should happen on the following shift. That way, the client's family can stay up to date on their loved one's health. When I was working with my team at Honor, I wanted to create opportunities for people who looked like me. I'm proud to say that there are single moms and other women without traditional educational training who lead teams here. The makeup of this company proves that people with diverse backgrounds can be part of a successful tech company. This has to be a model for the future.
I'm confident it will happen.
(1)The author mentions Amy to _______.
A. share a precious memory B. advocate caring for the elderly C. show the importance of caregivers D. inform the readers of a touching story (2)Which of the following about Honor is true? A. It allows flexible working schedules. B. It gives higher salary and more paid leave. C. It mainly employs single mothers and males. D. It matches caregivers with clients at random.
(3)What does the underlined part \"stay up to date\" probably mean? A. Go to bed later than usual. B. Get the latest information.
C. Attend to somebody at fixed time. D. Accompany somebody day and night. (4)The last paragraph intends to tell us that _______. A. women are able to hold up half the sky B. success has nothing to do with education C. Honor will probably have a better future D. people with diverse backgrounds will be a model 【答案】 (1)C (2)A (3)B (4)C

On Sundays. Amy, my grandmother's most-loved Honor professional caregiver, comes over to get her dressed for church. She loves the time she spends with Amy.”

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology?
One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK's first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second.
The wider application is to support connected equipment on the \"internet of things\" -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other.
Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole.
Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years.
(1)Why does Prof William Webb say \"the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes\"?
A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other. D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks.
(2)The underlined word \"addressing\" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to________.
A. making a speech to B. trying to solve C. managing to decrease D. responding to (3)The last paragraph indicates that .
A. it'll take several years .to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D. it's probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain (4)What do we know about the text? A. Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service. B. Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G. C. The application of 5G will make life much easier. D. 5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK. 【答案】 (1)D (2)B (3)A (4)C

Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole.“其他不同的声音表示,集中精力推广更广泛的农村宽带接入,解决目前的网络覆盖问题,将对整个英国更有利。”
With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that
consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. 故选A。

Alison Malmon was ending her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania. US, when she got the news: Her older brother Brian, a student at Columbia University; was suffering from mental illness.
Inspired by this, Malmon formed a group at her university to organize students to talk openly about mental health. It soon blossomed into a national organization that today has more than 450 campus chapters. Leaders with the organization spend their time talking with college students about the pressure that today's young people face.
\"What you hear often is just a need to be perfect,\" said Malmon, \"and a need to present oneself as perfect.\" A new study in the UK proved that this need for perfectionism is simply part of today's society. In the study, two researchers studied more than 40,000 students from the US, Canada, and the UK. They found that what they called \"socially-prescribed (社会定向型的) perfectionism\" increased by a third between 19 and 2016.
Lead researcher Thomas Curran said that while so many of today's young people try to present
a perfect appearance online, social media isn't the only reason behind this trend. Instead, he said, it may be driven by competition in modem society, meaning young people can't avoid being sorted and ranked in both education and employment. That comes from new normal situation like greater numbers of college students, national examination and parenting that increasingly emphasizes success in education.
For example, in 1976, half of high school seniors expected to get a college degree of some kind. By 2008, more than 80 percent expected the same. The researchers also said changes in parenting styles over the last two decades might have had an impact. As parents feel increased pressure to raise successful children, they in turn pass their \"achievement anxieties\" onto their kids through \"too much participation in their child's activities or emotions
Those in the mental health community like Malmon say they're concerned about the impact the culture of perfectionism has on mental health on campuses. \"Mental health has truly become this generation's social justice (公正)issue,\" she said. \"It's our job to equip them with the tools and to let people know that it's not their fault.\"
(1)What inspired Alison Malmon to start a group related to mental health? A.Her brother's mental illness. B.Her project during the freshman year. C.The pressure she had experienced. D.Her strong interest in mental health.
(2)What may be pushing today's young people to struggle to be perfect, according to the article?
a. The impact of social media.
b. Parents' high expectations of their children. c. The decreasing number of college students. d. The fierce competition in society. e. Their desire to draw their parents' attention. A.a, b, c B.a, d, e C.a, b, d D.b, c, e
(3)What does Malmon think is a way to help young people manage the pressure of perfectionism?
A.Enabling them to know what is to blame for their pressure. B.Lowering their expectations of themselves. C.Reducing parents' involvement in their children's life. D.Making them aware of what true social responsibility is. (4)What is the article mainly about? A.A new study on college students. B.Research into the trend of perfectionism.
C.A group devoted to helping people stay mentally healthy. D.Various pressures that today's young people are facing.

If you're a fan of smart technology, you may have had some sleepless nights lately. That's because Alexa, the artificial intelligence (AI) behind US company Amazon's Echo smart speakers, has been \"letting out an unprompted (自发的),creepy (令人毛骨悚然的)cackle for no apparent reason, according to BBC News.
Many social media users shared their stories of Alexa scaring them with the seemingly unprompted laugh.
\"Every time Alexa laughs, an angel dies,\" Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk joked on social media.
On March 7, Amazon released an update that fixed the problem, saying that the laugh was caused by Echo devices mistakenly thinking that users had said the command \" Alexa, laugh\". However, what should have been a funny story raised the ongoing topic of man versus machine.
With the rise of artificial and robotic technology, \"Digital machines started to demonstrate broad abilities in pattern recognition, complex communication, and other area that used to be particularly human,\" wrote Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee in their book The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies. They believe that AI will \"do more and more, and our lives will get better\".
However, ever since the earliest days of AI there have been concerns that some day, software will take over the world, leaving the fate of humans unknown.
\"With artificial intelligence we are order the demon (魔鬼)Musk told students during a meeting at MIT in 2014. \"If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that. So we need to be very careful
Many scientists have shared the same concern. The late British physicist Stephen Hawking said at a technology conference in Portugal in November that \"computers can. in theory, imitate human intelligence, and exceed it ••• AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization.\"
If creators are to safely control AL however, Hawking suggested that they \"employ best practice and effective management\".
I am an optimist and I believe that we can create AI for the good of the world,\" he said at the conference. \"We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management, and prepare for its consequences well in advance.\" (1)What does the underlined word \"cackle\" in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.movement B.laughter C.scream D.story

We spend a great amount of time listening to music. Most college students listen to music at
least three or four times a week, and more than 50 percent of them go to at least one concert per year.
According to new research, we may be born liking music, because human beings are born to find certain combinations of sounds attractive. For example, young children can recognize a familiar Song even when its key is changed. Similarly, they respond with more emotions to their mothers' singing than to their mothers' speech. Careful analysis of mothers' child-directed songs indicates that each mother's songs remain stable from one \"performance\" to the next, and this may encourage children's engagement with the songs.
Research with adults suggests that music catches our attention by activating(激活) brain pathways that are most suited to processing music than to processing other kinds of sound. Specifically, music appreciation relies on the auditory cortex(听觉皮层) on the right side of the brain, which is specialized to process sound that characterizes music-in contrast to the left auditory cortex, which processes the stop-and-start bursts of sound that characterize speech. Although some Psychologists remain skeptical about whether music may have powerful effects on our thinking, a number of studies have shown that listening to music can increase people's spatial reasoning abilities Furthermore, It is clear that music can greatly influence our emotions. Personally significant music activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure and reward, the same areas that are activated by sex and good food.
Researchers do not agree about how humans' abilities to process and enjoy music have come into being. Anyway, the next time you enjoy listening to a piece of music, remember that the most complex pieces of audio equipment are the ones between your headphones.

A bra (胸罩) that can be used as a gas mask. Hitting beer bottles over peopled heads. How to turn tequila(龙舌兰) into diamonds? These are just some of the themes for this year's Ig Nobel prizes—the most unusual scientific award ceremony in the world. And the winners are... The chemistry prize went to Javier Morales from the National University of Mexico for his research into how to make diamonds from tequila. He used a pressure container to do this. The public health prize was awarded to Elena Bodnar of Illinois, for patenting a bra that can be changed into a pair of gas masks. “It was inspired by the Chernobyl nuclear accident,\" said Bodnar, who is originally from the Ukraine.
The physics prize was awarded to Katherine Whitcome at the University of Cincinnati and colleagues. They looked into the question of why pregnant women don't fall over.
The veterinary(兽医的) medicine prize was awarded to Catherine Douglas and Peter Rowlinson of Newcastle University's school of agriculture. Their research showed that giving cows names such as Daisy increases their milk production. \"It's the highlight of my career, ' said Douglas. \"The work amused the public, but it also addressed a serious problem about the welfare of animals.
The peace prize went to Stephan Bolliger and his colleagues from the University of Bern in Switzerland. They did experiments to discover whether it's more painful to hit someone on the head with a full beer bottle or an empty one. 'Empty beer bottles are stronger than full ones,' the researchers reported.
And the economics prize went to the officials of four Icelandic banks (Kaupthing bank Landsbanki, Glitnir bank and Central Bank of Iceland) for demonstrating that tiny banks can be rapidly transformed into huge banks, and vice versa.

A new study has found that cats can connect with people in the same way as dogs and children. The research, published in Current Biology, suggests the social abilities of cats to form human
attachments has been greatly underestimated. The study notes that more cats live with humans than dogs do worldwide. But historically, more scientific research has centered on the social relationships between people and dogs.
The researchers designed experiments similar to methods used to measure human attachment behaviors. For example, other studies have observed how babies react to being reunited with caregivers after being separated for short periods.
About 70 cats were studied. The hehavior of the animals was observed by experts who divided them into two groups. percent were judged to be \"securely attached\" to caregivers, while 36 percent were found to be \"insecurely attached.\" The cats with secure attachments showed several signs of \"reduced stress\" levels, the study found. These cats were found to be more comfortable and effectively balanced their attention between the person and their surroundings. However, the cats with an insecure attachment showed clear signs of stress. These included shaking of the tail, repeated licking or staying completely away from the caregiver.
She added that the results showed that the level of secure and insecure attachments in cats is very close to those measured in human babies. In humans, research has found that 65 percent of babies are also securely attached to their caregivers. The researchers also were interested in finding out if socialization training would change the results.
But after a six-week training program for the cats, there were no major differences. \"Once an attachment style has been established between the cat and its caregiver, it appears to remain relatively stable overtime, even after a training and socialization intervention(干预), \"Vitale said. (1)What does the study mentioned in this passage show? A. Cats' social ability is little thought of.
B. Dogs have more sociable personalities than cats. C. Historically, dog is much smarter than cats. D. Cats have bad social relationships with dogs. (2)What will happen if the cats feel unsafe?
A. They tend to attack their caregivers. B. They are going to shake their tails. C. They will stay close to their caretakers. D. They are likely to balance their attention. (3)What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A. Attachment level in babies is higher than in cats. B. Training program plays an important role in the results. C. Researchers feel insecure when experimenting with cats.
D. It's hard to make changes to attachment styles between cats and caregivers. 【答案】 (1)A (2)B (3)D
