IV. 阅读理解
一、阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
It seems that artificial intelligence can do much more than ever imagined. AI has become an important part of our everyday life. But how about the more creative works of mankind? Art, music, poetry—these are inspired not by logic(逻辑) or reason but by emotion. The greatest writers and artists in history were mainly inspired by their thoughts and feelings. And yet, we have been able to create AI that can produce creative works.
In 2017, researchers in Switzerland created a computer system called “Deep Artificial Composer”(DAC), which could create original music all by itself. To “teach” the DAC, the researchers trained it to “listen” to over 2,000 different folk songs. Based on this, the AI taught itself how to create music, including getting the timing right and choosing the right notes. Florian Colombo said that his aim in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music—not to have it made for them. “A good composer with creative ideas will never be replaced by a computer,” Colombo stated.
Besides music, AI has entered the world of poetry as well. In April 2018, Chinese and Japanese researchers created an AI program that uses images to write poems. In an experiment, the AI analysed the shapes and colours in a series of images, and then translated them into words and phrases. The poems were then shown to 500 human judges. The judges were asked whether they could tell if the poems were written by a human or a computer. As many as 40 percent of the judges mistakenly thought the poems were written by a human.
Not even journalists are safe from the advancement of AI. In fact, the world’s
first AI news presenter was recently created in China. Although “his” voice and appearance are a bit stiff, he was described as a “good first effort” by experts.
With its ability to create music, poetry, and speech, one has to wonder how far off AI is from the creative mind of a human.
( ) 1.Which of the following is inspired by logic, NOT emotion?
A. Poetry. B. Maths. C. Music. D. Painting.
( ) 2.How was the DAC able to create original music all by itself?
A. The scientists taught it.
B. It copied musicians’ works.
C. It chose the right notes naturally.
D. It taught itself by studying over 2,000 different folk songs.
( ) 3.According to Florian Colombo, which of the following is correct?
A. The DAC’s purpose is to create its own music.
B. The DAC’s purpose is to replace musicians.
C. The DAC’s purpose is to help musicians to create.
D. The DAC’s purpose is to become a popular song writer.
( ) 4.The third paragraph stated that ________.
A. the AI wrote poems according to shapes and colours in pictures.
B. the poems were judged by 200 people.
C. half of the judges could not tell if the poems were written by AI.
D. AI could replace a poet’s work in the future.
( ) 5.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. AI is still within the control of humans.
B. AI may replace humans one day.
C. AI will challenge people in many jobs.
D. AI is gaining the ability to produce creative works.

It’s a Whole New Age
Inventions make the world better, smarter, and even a little bit more fun. In November 2018, the Time magazine published an article called “2018’s Top 50 Inventions”. Teens has selected three of the most interesting inventions for you. Let’s take a look.
Lifepack Carry-on Closet(储藏室)
Travelling can be fun, but packing can be quite annoying. No matter how neatly you pack your clothes, you always end up having to pull out everything in order to find what you need.
Well, the Lifepack Carry-on Closet, designed by the Danish startup Solgaard Design, might change that for good.
From the outside, the Lifepack looks like an ordinary suitcase(行李箱). But inside, it contains a set of moveable shelves that keep clothes in good order and maximise the space. Its shelf system has many extra pockets and is also removable.
With the Lifepack, when you get to your destination, you just need to take out the shelf system and hang it in your hotel wardrobe.
LynQ
Becoming separated from friends in crowds or losing contact with your family
in a strange place can be frightening.
But fear not, for LynQ, a new location device, can help.
When you wear a LynQ, you use a combination of GPS technology and long-range radio signals to find other LynQ users up to a distance of 5 kilometres.
In addition, an onscreen dot points each user in the right direction, like a compass.
As Time notes, “LynQ solves the three Ws: No more worrying, wandering or waiting around.”
Gravity jet suit
If you’re a big fan of Iron Man, you must have been impressed by his amazing jet suit. Now there is a real jet suit for us to try.
Developed by London-based technology company Gravity Industries, the flying suit is equipped with six engines. Two engines are placed on each arm, and another two are built into a backpack. Together, the engines can provide 1,050 horsepower(马力) to make the wearer move at speeds of up to 51 kilometres per hour. In the future, the suits creator even hopes to create a racing competition.

V. 书面表达
Nowadays, people tend to stare at their mobile phones almost everywhere—in subways, restaurants, lifts, supermarkets, everywhere. While it is normal to check your phone occasionally, if you are one of those people who just can’t stop using their phone, then you could be suffering from mobile phone addiction.
We cannot ignore the mobile phone’s negative influences. Many people waste too much time using their phones every day. Their spare time is spent on things like mobile phone games, watching Internet videos, and checking social media apps. Such constant use can lead to physical health problems like neck pain and
eye
disease.

“phubbing”—ignoring the people around you in favour of your phone.
It is high time that people put their phones aside and raised their heads. Pay more attention to others and have more face-to-face communication. What’s more, do more exercise, which is much more beneficial than time spent on a phone. In a word, only when we learn to limit our phone use can we live a happy life.
听力材料
第一节
听下面5段对话,每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。每段对话仅读一遍。
Conversation 1
W: Have you ever wanted to learn another foreign language?
M: Yes, but I don’t have enough money to pay for classes.
W: You could use some apps to learn. Lots of them are free.
M: Really? Can you recommend one for me?
W: Sure. The one I like best is an app named Multilingo. It helps you remember new words and grammar in really creative ways. There are online lessons, games, and lots of interesting exercises.
M: Thanks! I’ll give it a try.
Conversation 2
W: Guess what! Mum has decided to start studying art from next week.
M: What? Why?
W: Well, she said she’s always loved art but chose business administration at university because her parents thought it would be too difficult for an artist to find work.
M: So she wants to study art now?
W: Yeah, you know she loves oil painting. She said it’s been her dream for a long time.
M: Wow, so do you think she will give up her job?
W: No, it’s not necessary. She will study online in her free time.
M: Oh, OK, that sounds great then!
Conversation 3
M: I know that exercise is good for us, but sometimes it seems so hard to leave the sofa.
W: Yeah, I know what you mean. I just feel too tired when I get home each night.
M: So how are we supposed to get two and a half hours of exercise each week? Exercise on our days off?
W: Maybe. But I also heard about a new sofa that shakes every two hours to tell people to stand up. I think you should get one!
Conversation 4
W: Hey, did you see the first-ever picture of a black hole that came out yesterday? It’s amazing!
M: Yeah, it’s like an image of a bright ring around a black hole. Isn’t it about 55 million light-years from Earth?
W: I’m not sure, but it sure is a great achievement in space science.
M: Sure is! I thought black holes couldn’t be seen, but now we have photo evidence.
Conversation 5
W: Isn’t 3D printing amazing? Nowadays, people can create almost anything from plastic, glass, metal, even chocolate!
M: Yes, but have you heard about 4D printing?
W: No! Really? What is it? How is it different to 3D printing?
M: Well, apparently, it can do all that 3D printing can do, but also turn products into smart objects, like objects that can change their shape according to their environment.
第二节
听下面一段对话,回答第6和第7题。这段对话读两遍。
Conversation 6
M: I am so tired of driving all those hours to work!
W: Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to drive two hours to work each day. But now I live within walking distance of my office. I don’t even need a bike.
M: Lucky you. I just hope self-driving cars will be introduced soon.
W: I don’t trust self-driving cars. If an accident were to happen, the life-saving decision would be left up to AI, not a human. Besides, the road conditions around here are not good enough.
M: Well, I think self-driving cars are the future. I think a car driven by AI is much safer than a car driven by a human, who could be unskilled or drunk. It’ll reduce traffic accidents greatly, not to mention travel times. I can’t wait!
听下面一段对话,回答第8至10题。这段对话读两遍。
Conversation 7
W: You know, my father’s thinking about buying some drones.
M: What? Drones? You mean like remote-controlled flying toys? What fun!
W: No, silly! They’re for my father’s farm. They’ll be much bigger than a toy.
M: Oh, I didn’t know drones were used in farming. I guess they have a practical use, too.
W: Right. And since my father is a farmer, he knows all about the latest farming technology.
M: So what is he going to use the drones for? Checking his crops?
W: Yes, he says a drone can spot sick crops from a few kilometres away. That way, he can find out quickly where the problems are.
M: Sounds good. I guess it would save him so much time, too. Just imagine having to drive everywhere. Plus the drone would give a better view. Now I understand.
W: Yes, he also wants to buy a crop-spraying drone.
M: Good idea, it’ll save him so much time. And it’ll be cheaper than hiring an airplane and a pilot.
W: Yes, but he still needs to find people to control the drones. Hey, you like playing flying games—I should introduce you to my father!
